In Celebration of

Michael John Cowling

April 6, 1933 -  May 11, 2020

Passed peacefully at home with his family by his side, on Monday May 11, 2020, at the age of 87.

Born in London, England to John (Jack) and Ethel Cowling, Mike became a proud Canadian in 1960. He loved sports (hockey, baseball and golf especially), kids, dogs and getting things organized. Happy to volunteer his time, he helped start the Clarkson – Lorne Park Soccer Association, served as President of the Clarkson Hockey Association, and then helped create and run the Mississauga Black Hawks of the MTHL.

He leaves behind Marion, his wife of 60 years, whom he loved with all of his heart and above all else. Together they raised Neil, Elizabeth and Tracey with the knowledge that they were cherished and loved unconditionally. He was the proud Poppa of Lindsay, Kyle, Samantha, Matthew and Alex; and great grandfather of Jamie and Peyton.

Pre-deceased by his beloved older brothers Douglas and Derek, Mike will be missed by his nephews and nieces; Graeme, Ian, Anthony, Gill, Bridget and Peter.

The family would like to thank Dr. Justin Chopra of Trillium Hospital, the Mississauga-Halton LHIN, and the nurses and staff at Acclaim Health for their care and support during his final days.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life gathering at a later date.

Long lost memories

When as a lad at primary school my mum used to bake cake for us to eat at tea time, we had some very draconian rules at our tea table. None us us boys, myself, Doug or Derek were allowed to scoff our food, if we wanted another drink we had to get it ourselves and it had to be water. No arguing, shouting, kicking or disagreements at the table. The reason we wanted to eat fast was because we all wanted to get at those lovely cakes first. Mum and Dad introduced little flags that we were allowed to prod into our favourite cake to reserve it for later in an effort to stop us bolting our food. This probably explains why I always finished eating so fast but in later life that was so that I would have more time for talking after finishing eating.

My brothers never did apologise for the time they distracted me during the meal and switched my cake flag into dads favourite cake! I knew it was them that did it but took the blame never breathing a word, I loved my brothers dearly and have so many happy memories from a thoroughly happy childhood. There were less nice memories too; cold baths, power cuts and the smogs but the good and happy memories extended and built into the rest of my life and I am sure you will hear about some of the more recent other ones shortly. I had a full and very fun life.

Written by Antony from the point of view of Mike using memories passed on by Derek.
