In Celebration of

Mary McCall

August 5, 1922 -  August 2, 2019

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, born Aug 5, 1922, died Aug 2, 2019. Predeceased by dearly loved husband Ian in 1991, parents William and Minnie Roddick, and brother Vernon in 2010. Survived by children Leigh, Catherine, Douglas (Monique), and granddaughter, Iris.
Mary was born in Jubillee, BC, and raised in New Westminster. In her youth she was both academically and athletically accomplished. Mary graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Business Administration in 1944, and joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corp. She rose to the rank of Sergeant, and was stationed in England during WW2, where she made many lifelong friends.
After the war, Mary joined Dupont of Canada, where she met Ian. They married in Montreal, and raised their children there, in Toronto, and in Kingston, and settled in Islington, ON. Mary graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, with a Bachelor of Education, and became a teacher when living in Islington.
Summers were spent at the cottage in Southampton, ON. After Ian passed, Mary remained in her sunny condo, active in bridge, curling, reading, theater, and travel. She was able to spend time at the cottage up to the age of 95, following the sun from patio to patio.
These past two years, Mary was happy and content in her Annex apartment above Monique and Doug, with cat and bird visitors, crosswords, reading, and knitting.
Mary was strong, independent, sophisticated, loyal, humorous, a stickler for proper grammar, supportive, and stoic.
“If there's another world, she is in bliss, if there is none, she made the most of this.” (Robert Burns)
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Thursday August 8th from 4 pm- 7pm. Reflections at 6pm. For those who wish donations may be made to Covenant House or the Salvation Army.

Mary was a delightful woman who cherished her time by herself. She loved old movies, comedies, solitaire and crossword puzzles which she was excellent at completing. She was a pleasure to spend time with and would share her views freely. I was fortunate to have spent special moments with her and she made me a better person. In my world, she will be greatly missed!
Mary, may you rest in peace!

Leigh, Dougie, Cath & Iris, We were so very sorry to hear yesterday about Mary. She was the loveliest, warmest of people and we always enjoyed talking to her over all the tennis seasons. We’ve missed her up here at Southampton these past couple of summers. Bill & Steve Harper always enjoyed “the funny lady next door” as Bill kiddingly called Mary, who would poke her head out & laugh at them guffawing on the Harper lawn. So sorry for your loss. We understand.

I was sorry to read of your Mom's death in the Globe. I have memories of her as a warm and caring person and the fun she would have with the group of women in the "Ladies Morning Class" as they played tennis in Southampton. They all wanted to improve their game and to help one another -- and they always had a great time! I hope that the happy memories you have of your Mom will comfort you in your sadness.

Dear Doug and family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom/grandmother. No matter the age, losing a parent is difficult. She sounded like an accomplished woman. Back when I was teaching tennis, I remember her walking across to get her newspaper every morning. I’m thinking of you during this difficult time.
