Passed away on Monday, October 2nd, 2023 in Toronto at the age of 74 after a long illness. Predeceased by her parents William Treacey and Ellen Foley (Eileen). Beloved mother to Treacey, Samantha (Rupert), Sinead (Marco), and Stepmother to Patrick (Jaimie). She was particularly proud of her grandchildren Meredith, Ellis, Finnigan, Kieran, Hailey and Madison. Adored sister of Iomair (Linda), Gilbert (Marie) and Gabriel(Finn) in Dublin.

Mary’s parents were married in Killimor Galway in 1943. When their marriage was registered, Treacy was spelled incorrectly and a second E was added to her father’s last name; Treacey. When they tried to rectify the error, it proved to be too difficult and besides, they liked the change and kept it.

Mary Treacey was born on February 12th, 1949 in Dublin, Ireland. Her family had strong ties to Killimor Galway where she would spend her summers as a child with her brothers. In early 2000, she decided she would memorialize the family stories and history into a book. While there were too many stories to count, there are a few included so that others may understand the fiercely independent person she became and how she passed this onto her children. She proudly stated that she was present in 1972 when the British Embassy burned down in Dublin staying on until the wee hours of the morning with the other protesters until the “roof caved in”. She was a staunch anti-monarchist; she mailed letters with the stamps of the former Queen upside down as a form of protest. Her children laugh to think how she would have loved to send a letter with a stamp of King Charles upside down.

She travelled extensively and lived in Paris, London, and then settled first in Thompson located in Northern Manitoba in 1976 before settling in Mississauga Ontario in the mid-eighties. She upgraded her administrative skills by attending college to eventually work as an Executive Assistant at Rogers Communications for over 25 years; a job she loved dearly. In the 90’s and early aughts, she was heavily involved in the management of the Toronto International Film Festival while at Rogers.

Cremation to be held at Yorke Memorial Chapel. Friends and family may call Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto (East of the Jane Subway Station, and west of Windermere Ave.) for a Memorial Visitation on Saturday, October 14th 2023, from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Toronto Grace Hospital.

Mary considered herself to be a Canadian, but Irish at heart. She had long ago given up her religious faith but was still very spiritual and prayed every day. In keeping with her wishes, her daughters will repatriate her ashes back to Ireland. Rest in peace, we love you mom.
