In Celebration of

Mary L. Black

March 30, 1923 -  December 8, 2023

Mary Black, long-time resident of Etobicoke. Beloved wife of the late Donald L. Black (1988). Loving Mom to Ted Black (Sharon) of Brantford, Nancy Taylor (Randy) of Oro-Medonte, Dave Black (Kathleen) of Etobicoke. Proud Grandma of Sean (Jamie), Patricia, Michelle (Jeff), Jonathan (Carrie), Bryan (Ayla), Graeme (Jen), Steve (Midge), Michael (Sarah), Christine (Frank). Great Grandma of Kaitlyn, Hudson, Ellen, Cooper, Joanna, Alexandra, Lauren, Eddie, Amy. Predeceased by her parents Stanley Naylor and Florence Stafford, her brother Robert Naylor (2003) and sister Jean Naylor Graham (2020).

Mary was born in Newburgh, Ontario and grew up in Toronto. She was a graduate of Oakwood Collegiate, and Victoria College Household Science (Vic 47).
Mary and Don married in 1949. Don’s work took them to Sault Ste. Marie, Smiths Falls, Brockville, HMCS Gloucester; and then in 1955, with 3 young children in tow, to Burlington.
In the early 1960’s Mary began her career as a teacher of Home Economics and Family Studies at Glendale Secondary School in Stoney Creek. The family moved to Etobicoke in 1965, and Mary taught at Kipling Collegiate for a decade before taking early retirement.

In retirement, prior to Internet technology, Mary spent much time doing genealogy research. She found primary sources of information (birth, death, and marriage certificates) at archives in Toronto, Salt Lake City, and Ireland. Mary actively participated in the Ontario Genealogical Society, the University Women’s Club, the Orkney Bridge Club, and in later years the Humber Valley United Church Daytimers Group.
Throughout her life Mary maintained lasting friendships with her university classmates, neighbours and co-workers. She was a gracious host, an avid reader, and a loyal Blue Jays fan. Of upmost importance was her family.

Mary’s family is grateful for the service of Irma, her personal caregiver, and for the support of the staff at the Village of Humber Heights.

A private memorial service will be held. Donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.

The Blacks, the Plants and Tanager Cr -i was in kindergarten and it was such a warm friendship that i remember even at that young age - the ease of the friendship of the Blacks, Curries and Plants. To this day i remember how close our parents were. Your dad and his quick wit sitting on our screened in porch at Cranston Crescent. Your mom with her gentle touch. And her beautiful skin and wavy hair. She was beautiful and so gentle. End of a really wonderful era

My deepest condolences to Mary's family. I met Mary when we lived at Widdicombe. She was such a sweet lady. She was always smiling. She made me feel welcome when we moved into the building. Thought me the importance of family. I noticed her picture in the newspaper yesterday. Brought back many happy memories. I was one of the lucky ones that had the pleasure of meeting Mary. Even though it was years ago, the memories came back. All good memories. If I could say just one thing to Mary today, I would say thank you for being so kind.
