Mary Eileen Wallace, born March 28, 1928, passed away March 14, 2025, in hospital with family present, following a brief decline in health. Mary was predeceased in 2002 by her husband, John T. F. Wallace after a loving fifty year marriage. Much loved mother of Anne and Nancy, cherished mother-in-law of Chris Gibbs, adored Grandma of Anne Elizabeth (Vasilios Karagiannis) and Andrew Edward (Samantha Cicciarella) Gibbs. Sister of the late Nancy (Dean Richard) and David Witherspoon, sister-in-law of Erna Witherspoon and Nancy Wallace, and loved and loving aunt of her nieces and nephews in the Richard, Witherspoon, Wallace and Young families.
Mary Witherspoon grew up on Armadale Ave. and attended Humberside Collegiate before training as a nurse at Women’s College Hospital, Toronto, where she graduated with awards and continued to work. After her marriage and first child, Mary became a homemaker before returning to work as a public health nurse in Etobicoke. Mary and John were active members of St. Matthew’s Islington, enjoyed many years curling at Weston GCC, and hosted friends and neighbours at home, where Mary was able to remain into her nineties, living independently. Family, friends old and new, advisors and care givers are gratefully acknowledged for providing Mary with guidance, support, love and kindness in her elder years.
Visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto) from 3-6 pm Thursday, March 20, 2025. Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Islington, (3962 Bloor St. W., Etobicoke) on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 11:30 am. Cremation to follow, interment at a later date. Donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation.
