In Celebration of

Mars (Phoenix) Kaufman

May 28, 2006 -  November 13, 2020

Kaufman, Mars Phoenix James

Mars’ short life came to end on November 13th, 2020. Although only fourteen years, xey (Mars’ chosen pronouns were xey/xem/xeir) filled every day with joy, laughter and sometimes heartbreak. Mars was born to Marlo Miazga and Andrew Kaufman and was soon joined by xeir fabulous sister Frida. Mars was loved by grandparents Barry and Karen Miazga, Rolly and Shirley Kaufman. Xey will also be deeply missed by Auntie Liz, Kristy and Janet and Uncle Mike and Simon, and xeir beautiful cousins. Although gone xeir commitment to empathy and inclusion, along with xeir great capacity to love, ensures xeir memory will live on as it continues to inspire us.

In Mars’ memory please consider donating to Myles Ahead, a foundation helping to advance child and youth mental health.

A memorial service was held for Mars on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 for a limited gathering of immediate family only. Joining the live service virtually were hundreds of family, friends, colleagues, teachers, classmates and parents, caregivers and servicepeople whose presence and love were felt and deeply appreciated.

With heartfelt and deepest sorrow, I remember Mars (Phoenix) as the first infant in the neighbourhood who I had the honour of meeting. A charming, and beautiful young soul.

Andrew, Marlo, Frida and families
I was so saddened to hear the news of Mars' passing last week and am sending my deepest condolences to all of you.
Treasure the wonderful memories you all made together in his short 14 years and I hope they will bring you all comfort at this sad time.

Mars was such a kind person.
I remember playing dnd with xem, partnering with xem on school projects, and I noticed that no matter who
Xey were talking to, xey were always so kind.
This was such a shock and I know that Mars will be in my, and all of our hearts and memories.

Mars was an amazing person. Sadly we split up after middle school and I wish we could have stayed close. Mars was a great, light hearted person, whenever the room was gloomy xey always knew how to make everyone break a smile. I know Mars in a better place now. My condolences to the family.

Although I only met Mars on a few occasions I felt I knew xem through listening to his Aunt Liz speak about xem often. I wish I got to know xem more personally as xem always seemed like such a kind and thoughtful person. I am so sorry for the family’s loss. My thoughts are with you all during this extremely difficult time.

Love Lisa
