In Celebration of

Mark Shrum

December 29, 1964 -  February 6, 2022

With heavy hearts we announce that Mark Shrum, of Mississauga, passed away on the morning of February 6, 2022, at the age of 57. Mark will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mark was predeceased by his father Lorne. He is survived by his mother Irene, sister Sherri, brother Michael, wife Tanya, children Katrina, and Andrew.

Born in Hamilton and raised in Smithville, Mark spent his childhood in a small community with his siblings Sherri and Mike, playing hockey, hunting frogs in the 20 Mile Creek, playing with dogs, riding dirt bikes, and spending hours in the field behind his family house.

In high school, Mark played in a band which continued into his lifelong passion for music. We have many fond memories of him improvising on his guitar in the evenings. Mark loved music.

Mark and his friends built a cabin on Shawanaga Lake up North where they enjoyed fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and shooting potato guns. Lifelong friendships were sealed and those were some of the happiest moments of his life.

Mark worked various jobs which included driving heavy machinery. A few days before Mark turned 30, he lost his right leg in a construction accident. His left leg was also badly damaged but was fortunately reconstructed. Mark’s life shifted abruptly - he had to learn to walk again and to drive with a prosthetic leg. He went back to school, got married, and built a family. He was a man of great strength, will, and heart. He learned new skills professionally and for the rest of his working life, he stayed with telecommunication companies where he was a valued team member.

Over the last ten years, Mark worked tirelessly on improving his property on Lake Erie. He loved the place dearly. Mark and the lake challenged each other. Every year Mark built a higher wall. The lake did not care.

He was at the heart of every event in the cottage community by the lake: fixing the road with his tractor, bringing a load of dirt to the neighbour, making fries for a potluck or setting up fireworks. Some of the best memories of Mark by family and friends were made at the cottage. Mark had a big heart, and our loss is great.

Mark was a loving son, brother, husband, and father, a rock of his family. He was especially proud of his children: Katrina, a successful third year student at UTM, and Andrew, a grade eight French immersion student, involved in judo and football. Whether it was making lunches, driving them to school, or cheering them on, Mark was always there for his kids. He was a patient and kind man, always with a smile and a big hug. His children think the world of him.

Mark was experiencing chronic pain due to his leg injuries and now with age, they affected his entire body.

We hope you are in a place where it does not hurt anymore, and you found peace. We love you.

To remember Mark, please share a glass of wine with your loved one.

We are so blesssed to have had Mark as our dear Baygrove friend and neighbour. There was nothing he wouldn't do to bring a smile and a helping hand to everyone in our community. When Mark smiled, everyone smiled. His dry sense of humour was so appreciated by everyone. His huge generous heart was felt by all.
You will never be forgotten and our community will never be the same. We know you will be smiling down on us, pain free, when we loudly play ABBA, singing in your honour.

Dear Mark,

No words can express the shock I felt hearing the news and the sadness I feel at your loss. Thank you for your kindness and your insight into all matters we talked about from time to time including, how better to landscape my new home and two sidewalks to deal with matters such as accessibility. Thank you for all you did for the neighbourhood, especially on our road. I had looked forward to spending time at your place in Costa Rica just a few weeks ago but COVID related travel concerns derailed those plans. I was looking forward to meeting up at Tim's as we discussed, you with your "toy" and me my Vette once spring rolled around again.

Sincere condolences to your family and all of your many friends.

I am going to miss you.
