In Celebration of

Maria de Lourdes Vieira

February 26, 1936 -  April 7, 2021

On the morning of April 7, 2021, while resting peacefully in her bed, Maria de Lourdes Vieira passed from her earthly home to her heavenly one while in her 85th year. She is survived by her husband and love of her life, Jose Vieira to whom she was married 66 years, and the three children who cherished her, along with their partners, Ivone (Peggy), Cindy (Tony) and John (Yvette). She is forever beloved “Vavo” to the five grandchildren she adored: Sonya, Olivia, Hannah, Sophia, and Elias.

Maria de Lourdes born in Furnas, on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, was the eldest of 11 children born to the parents she deeply loved and respected, Maria and Manuel De Melo. She is joined in heaven by her parents and dear brothers Fransisco and Alfredo, and she leaves behind her much-loved brothers; Eduardo, Urbano, Leonel, Lucindo, Tiberio, her sisters Diolena, Ana, and Natalia, as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews and nieces whom she loved dearly.

In 1964 Maria de Lourdes and Jose along with their daughters emigrated from the Azores and settled roots in Streetsville Ontario where their son was born and where they met many close friends, worked hard, raised their children, and remained most of their life. Family and faith were her devotions, and she was an active and dedicated member of St. Joseph’s church parish community her entire life in Canada.

Maria de Lourdes took pleasure in her garden, loved her walks and watching birds. She wrote and gifted wonderful poetry as expressions of her love of God and the family for whom she had dedicated her life. She was a warm and caring soul who was loved by many for the generosity of her spirit and the beautiful smile she had for everyone. Maria de Lourdes loved nothing more than making a meal for her family and friends and an evening sharing stories and laughter. She loved a good joke, had a sharp wit and sense of humor and while she practiced mercy in life, it did not apply to playing card games where she was clever and ruthless!

Buffeted by her deep faith, she was offered up her crosses daily and with gratitude she accepted them. Her life was well-lived, and she will be missed by so many.

”Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:1-3

For those who wish, the family would appreciate donations to sharelife.org or a charity of your choice.

For the safety of her friends and family, a private service will be held on Saturday the 17th of April at 12 p.m.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be planned for a time when all can gather together safely in person.

The service on Saturday will also be live-streamed, and can be accessed by copying and pasting the following link into a new browser window:

May she rest in peace with all the other angels. Her smile lit up a room, and many great memories growing up. She was funny.
My prayers are with you all.
God bless.

She was a joyous person, and we had many lighthearted moments together. I will remember her always, and her memory will be a blessing.

My deepest sympathies go to Joe, Yvonne, Cindy and John and families. They have countless wonderful memories to help diminish her sudden and tragic loss.
