With great sadness and heavy hearts, the family of Maria Olinda Soares announce Maria’s peaceful passing on July 18, 2024, in her 78th year. Predeceased by husband Evaristo of 16 years, and Salvatore of 23 years.

Maria was born in Faja de Cima, Sao Miguel Island, Portugal to Jose and Gloria Duarte on December 2nd, 1946. She later moved to Toronto in January, 1970 with her husband and three children.

Maria was a devoted mother to Eddie (Celia), Nelia (Joe) and Trish (Ralph). She was a cherished grandmother to Tanya (Liz), Samantha (Corey), Colin, Damiana, Aaron (Mallory), Christian (Recca), and Ethan (Hannah), and a treasured great-grandmother to Harper and Amaia. Maria’s greatest joy in life was her family whom she was surrounded by in her final hours.

Maria grew up in Sao Miguel island and married her first husband in 1963. In 1970 the two migrated to Toronto along with their children for a new life of endless possibilities. At the age of 32 she faced a sudden tragedy losing her husband. Life was not easy, but Maria leaned on her strong will to persevere. In the end, she created a life filled with love, and laughter, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Family will receive friends at Turner & Porter, Neweduk Chapel on 1981 Dundas St W, Mississauga, ON, Tuesday, July 23rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held at Merciful Redeemer Parish 2775 Erin Centre Blvd, Mississauga, ON on Wednesday, July 24th at 10am. A burial will take place after the Mass at Westminster Cemetery on 5830 Bathurst St, North York, ON.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Canadian Lung Foundation.
