In Celebration of

Maria Magdalena Dermastja (nee Neuert)

January 29, 1941 -  May 13, 2025

Marlene passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Joseph; and their two children, Jason (Julie) and Tara (Michael); and their three beautiful grandchildren that she loved more than anything: Oliver, Holden and Alora. She is survived by her brothers Michel (Hildegard) and Heinz (Charlene). Marlene was predeceased by her parents Anton and Maria and her siblings Franz (Edith), Peter (Christi) and Therese (Helmut).

Marlene was born in Germany in 1941 and immigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1960. She was a fearless spirit who spoke her mind and built her dreams around her family. Her beautiful voice and love of the guitar often filled the house with music. She always made sure that everyone felt included and loved. She had the most beautiful smile and laugh that you could pick out in a crowd: Marlene was the life of the party! True to her strong spirit, she was a champion tennis player. She was an incredible cook and baker. Her famous Christmas parties included family, friends and even Santa, who would all come to taste her delicious cabbage rolls. Marlene was an incredible artist. She loved colour and anything with leopard print. An avid gardener, she loved spending time at her cottage in Muskoka and her condo in Florida, surrounded by as many family and friends as possible.

Visitation for Marlene will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto from 6:00 to 9:00pm on Tuesday, May 20th, 2025. Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3055 Bloor St. W., on Wednesday, May 21st at 1:00pm.

If desired, please consider a donation, in Marlene’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.

I feel so fortunate to have known Marlene, if only for a short time. She was everything her obituary states and even more. Her loss will be felt by so many and I extend my deepest sympathy to Joe and her children. I treasure the little gifts she would always give us and one of the crystal boxes projects rainbows from our kitchen window every day and I think of Marlene as helping those along. Rest well dear friend.
