It is with heavy hearts that we announce Marija Filipovic (née Marcok), endearingly nicknamed “Seka”, of Mississauga, Ontario, born October 18, 1943, in Kisač, Serbia, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2021.

Marija was known for her passion for life, family, and faith. She survived cancer 25 years ago and took every opportunity to live life to its fullest and share her faith and inspire everyone she encountered. When she was diagnosed with cancer again 2 years ago, she fought it relentlessly and exhausted every treatment available no matter how difficult because she cherished every moment of life. She stayed strong when anyone else would have broken; through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. Marija always wore a smile, even in the toughest of times because she knew in her heart that her destiny was in God’s hands. She will be missed and her strong spirit will live on in her surviving family and friends.


Predeceased by her husband, Radivoj Filipovic, Marija is survived by their two children, Natasha Shields (née Filipovic) and Alexander “Sasha” Filipovic, son-in-law, William Shields, and grand-children she cherished deeply, Alexandra and Christian Shields, Sophie and Juliette Filipovic.


Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at Turner & Porter, Neweduk - Erin Mills Chapel. Burial will be at St. Volodymyr’s Cemetery following the service. Due to Covid-19 protocols, attendance is very limited and must be reserved in advance. The family will be coordinating the guest list in accordance with the protocols.
