July 15, 1921 -  May 21, 2020

(nee Whitaker)

Betty died peacefully on May 21, 2020. Born in Toronto to Sarah Wray Whitaker and George Edward Whitaker, and sister of Eleanor Wray Throop, she was in her 99th year.

Predeceased by her husband, Christopher Wilson (Bill) Tugman in 1984, she leaves her children Elizabeth Wray Mills (James Ralph Mills), and Christopher Glen Tugman (Sylvia Lynn Gardner) and grandchildren (Christopher William Tugman, James Stevenson Tugman).

A life-long advocate of the benefits of education, she graduated from the University of Toronto – Trinity College in 1944 and she was the Class Representative for over 50 years. In 1949, she was awarded a Fellowship from Trinity College, London. She was an active member of the University Women’s Clubs of Mississauga and Toronto for many years. In 2004 the University of Toronto presented her with an Arbour Award in recognition of her long service to the university.

The family thanks Joyce Frizzell and the members of the University Women’s Clubs of Mississauga and Toronto for their treasured friendship and support, as well as the staff at Port Credit Residence for their excellent care for our mother over the past seven years.

Donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
