Quietly at home, after a brief illness, with her children beside her. Cherished wife of Bill and mother of Joanne, Barbara Steele (Scot), and Peter Stanbridge (Karen). Lois was a beloved grandmother to Jake, Nick and Annie Steele and to CJ and Dana Stanbridge.
Lois grew up in Haliburton, Ontario with her beloved parents Anne and Cecil Roberts, and siblings Donna, Ron and Delaine. After the family moved to Toronto, Lois attended Oakwood Collegiate and met her lifelong friend June (Purvis) Chalmers.
While working as a registered nurse at Toronto General Hospital, Lois met and married Bill Stanbridge, an aeronautical engineer from England. His career took the growing family from Kalamazoo to Atlanta and Seattle. In 1969 they returned to Toronto to settle closer to Lois's parents and siblings.
When her children were grown, Lois returned to school to upgrade her nursing certification. She joined the staff of the Credit Valley Hospital as a psychiatric nurse, where she became a valued member of the team.
Lois had a real gift for friendship. She endeared herself to everyone who knew her. She was sympathetic, interested, funny and affectionate. Even in the hardest times, her smile would light up a room.
Lois was always ready to explore new things. Her interests included curling, art, antiquing, and trips to Stratford and the Shaw Festival. She loved shopping excursions, visits to friends, and travel. She and Bill were avid sailors, and made friendships with "the gang" from the Mimico Cruising Club that have lasted to the present day. Lois was in her element during her many visits to Barb and Scot's home and cottage, especially during holidays, where precious memories were created and she was surrounded by family and friends.
Lois made even more friendships when she moved to her new home at the Chartwell Grenadier residence in 2018. Dinnertime with her three friends became a highlight of each day, with lots of interesting conversation and laughter.
Special thanks are extended to the staff of the Chartwell Grenadier residence for their unfailing warmth, kindness and real affection for Lois. The family also extends sincere thanks to those who cared for her so compassionately in her last illness: the staff of St. Joseph's Hospital, the many caregivers and support workers who went beyond the call of duty to make her comfortable, and all those friends and acquaintances who sent messages of concern and support.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 3rd at 11:30 a.m at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St West, Toronto. The family will receive guests starting at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ashoka Canada would be appreciated.
