It is with profound sadness that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved Liam on Thursday, August 29, 2024. Liam was adored by his parents, David and Kathy (Haley), his twin brother Mackenzie (Mack) and younger brother Andrew, his extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins, and an infinite circle of friends, teammates, and colleagues. Though his time with us was far too short, the depth of his influence and the legacy he leaves behind stretch well beyond his 29 years.
Born and raised in Toronto, Liam was remarkably gifted, and his academic brilliance and athletic ability were only surpassed by his unwavering acts of service. Throughout his life, it was clear that Liam was destined for greatness, not only in his exceptional abilities but also in the profound ways he touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He was always driven and determined, a gifted athlete, with and an unwavering dedication to family, friends, and his beloved dog, Rogan.
Liam’s story was one of strength and resilience and he was an inspiration for all that was possible. He took life on with courage and determination, emerging as a beacon of strength and hope.
Liam was one of the three Horton boys who attended Royal St. George’s College (Class of 2013). A proud Georgian, Liam was a Prefect at the College, Canterbury House Captain, captain of the senior hockey team, and a longtime member of the soccer, rugby, badminton, and baseball teams.
After he graduated from RSGC, Liam continued his academic journey at Queen’s University, where he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mining and Mechanical Engineering. Liam’s outstanding academic performance at Queen’s was recognized through numerous accolades. He was a Dean’s Scholar, awarded with the prestigious Medal in Mining Engineering, was a two-time recipient of the R.S. McLaughlin Fellowship, and awarded the highly coveted Alexander G. Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship. Liam’s exceptional promise earned him a place in the doctorate program, where he was pursuing a PhD in Engineering, Mechatronics, and Robotics at the time of his passing. Most recently, Liam was recognized for his research and studies by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Throughout his PhD studies at Queen’s, Liam was not only a scholar but a valued member of the Queen’s Varsity Wrestling team and the Kingston wrestling community, providing invaluable support to his coaches and fellow athletes.
Liam’s tragic and accidental passing has left an immeasurable void in our hearts, as so much of his incredible potential remains unrealized. His energy, intelligence, and generosity were gifts he shared freely and we are heartbroken to lose him so soon. His memory will continue to inspire us, reminding us to live with the same drive, determination, and heart that he exemplified in his life.
