In Celebration of

Leila Reidy

April 17, 1926 -  May 7, 2019

Leila Reidy, age 93, passed away suddenly but peacefully in her apartment at the Tapestry Village Gate West retirement community on Tuesday May 7, 2019. Leila was born on April 17, 1926 in England, to Charles and Edith Hartley (Moore). She was brought to Canada by her parents as an infant, where her five younger siblings were born. As a young working woman, she met Anthony (Tony) Reidy and they married in 1953 and had three children. Leila re-joined the workforce after her youngest child started school (something not yet that common in the early ‘60s) and excelled at balancing work and motherhood. She worked at Goodyear in administration and accounting for many years until her retirement in 1987. Tony passed away in 1993 and in 2002, she met Charles (Chuck) Medcalf and they married in 2006 (Leila was 80 at the time of her remarriage). Chuck and Leila loved to travel together, and they enjoyed each other’s company until Chuck passed away in 2015. Leila was outgoing and made friends wherever she lived. She was always game to visit new places, meet new people and learn new things and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Leila is survived by her brothers Doug, Don and Greg and her sister Rita and is predeceased by her brother Jack. She will be remembered with love by her children: Kevin, Jay, Maureen and son in-law Dan. But she will be especially missed by her granddaughter Katie who looked forward to her “dinner with Nana” each week. Family, friends, and others whose lives Leila touched are invited to the Turner and Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas Street West from 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019, for a memorial gathering and reception. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Belwood Lodge and Camp, a summer camp for children and adults with special needs.

I first met Leila over a year ago when I filled on the Gratuities Committee where Leila was a member and we sat togethercounting the cash donated by the residents here at Tapestry for the Christmas gratuities for the staff. We first sorted and counted our allotment and then exchanged the money we had counted and recounted the cash the other member had couinted to check the totals. It is a long and painstaking job and Leila and I got through it with her cheerful attitude and really earned the lunch provided to us. Ever since we have felt like old friends and chatted when we met in nthe bistro having coffee or a snack. She was always a delight to see and we will all miss her.
