In Celebration of

Leela Poranganel

January 20, 1943 -  April 10, 2021

On the evening of April 10th 2021, while resting in her bed and surrounded by loved ones, Leela Poranganel peacefully passed at the age of 78.

She is survived by her beloved husband Joseph Poranganel to whom she was married for 52 years, and her three children Jane (Craig), Lynn (Steven), & Helen (David). She was lovingly known as “Ammachi” to her seven grandchildren whom she adored and cherished: Kailas, Devyn, Emma, Eva, Dias, Daniel & Ariyanna. She is joined in heaven by her parents & eldest brother (Pavoo). She leaves behind her beloved sisters and brothers who she still spent much of her time with: Aleyamma, Achamma, Mathai, Mary, Varghese, Jacob, Benny and Joy, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces & nephews, whom she loved dearly.

Leela was born in Vadavucode, Kerala, India on January 20th 1943 as the sixth of ten children to Pailey & Mathri Thannikkotu. In 1968, she immigrated to Canada from India. Later that year, she married the love of her life and later settled with their three daughters in Mississauga. She dedicated her life to her family faithfully supporting family members in their immigration efforts to Canada often taking care of them when they first arrived. She will be remembered for opening her home to everyone with a kindness and comfort that many often sought. Through her commitment to the larger family she enjoyed organizing family gatherings and became known for her cooking and amazing hospitality. For most, she was the glue that kept the family together.

She was a devout Catholic who led her life through the guidance of Christ and devotion to Mother Mary. She spent her time devoted to prayer and attending spiritual retreats and pilgrimages. Along with her spiritual devotion, generous nature and kind heart, she also had a great love of travel and fitness. Above all, spending time with family was her greatest joy.

“Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love” – Ephesians 4:2

My Dear Chechy, You will be forever in our thoughts and prayers. You will always remain in our hearts. I am deeply indebted to you for my being in Canada and for having encouraged me to become a Police Officer. I will always remember your patience, good counsel and always being non-judgemental. You were always a peace-maker and you touched so many lives in a very positive way. There are only a few like you in this world (now one less) and I, including Rita & Julia are priveleged and blessed to have been a part of your life. May you Rest inEternal Peace and God Bless.

Dear Poranganel Family,

I had the pleasure of meeting Leela on multiple occasions and witnessed the warmth and love she had for her family and friends. I always admired her energy and dedication to her family and enjoyed hearing of her parents adventures from Jane. My heart goes out to all of you at this difficult time. Thinking of you all and sending you my deepest condolences.

Love,

Tracey

On behalf of the Dixon and Hindmarsh families, our deepest sympathy to Joe, Lynn, Jane and Helen and the extended Poranganel family. For me personally, Leela made me feel like one of the family even before Jane and Craig met and married and she did likewise to my parents when they subsequently visited in Canada. Leela had a generous heart and a kind and gentle spirit and will be missed by all of us.
