In Celebration of

Kathleen "Phyllis" O'Dowd

November 28, 1930 -  April 14, 2025

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Kathleen “Phyllis” O’Dowd at Credit Valley Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Beloved wife of the late Michael O’Dowd. Cherished mother of Michele, Colm (Cathy, deceased), Brian (Anita) and both aunt and loving mother to Desmond. Adored Nana to Ryan and Terry. She will be missed by nieces and nephews in her native Ireland.

Phyllis was born in Dublin, the youngest in a family of six. She met and married our dad there in 1958 and they immigrated with three young children to Canada in 1963. Thanks to his career in the Coast Guard, she found herself moving home and family in quick succession from Sidney, Nova Scotia to Montreal to Thunder Bay before finally settling down in Mississauga.

She devoted herself to raising her children, worked as a volunteer and was a long-time member of the CWL in St. Martin of Tours Parish. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and became a proficient rug hooker. With our father she travelled extensively to various parts of the United States and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and made regular trips back to Ireland.

Phyllis continued these travels after his death in 1997 as well as enjoying her home, garden and family activities and celebrations. She loved music, theatre, discussing the latest news, long walks by the Credit River with companions, a good mystery novel and a properly made hot cup of tea. She remained in her own home until the age of 91 when a series of health issues required a move to assisted living. She bore these challenges with fortitude and resilience and remained sharp witted and engaged until the end.

Many thanks to the staff at Sunrise of Erin Mills, especially to those PSWs and nurses who cared for her over the past three years. Thanks too, to the emergency and medical ward staff at Trillium Hospital, Credit Valley Site.

In memory of Phyllis, donations may be made to The Scott Mission or your local Food Bank would be greatly appreciated.
