In Celebration of

Kathleen Callanan

April 20, 1945 -  June 4, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Kathleen Callanan announce her passing on Tuesday, June 4th 2024, at the age of 79. Kathleen (née Hallinan) was the beloved wife of Jack for 60 incredible years. She will be missed dearly by her daughter Caroline, son Brian (Orla) and daughter Sarah (Bradley). She was the proud and doting Nana to her grandchildren Jack Charles, Patrick Charlie, and Grace Kathleen who were the lights of her life.

Kathleen was one of five children born and raised in the village of Craughwell, Co. Galway, Ireland to John “T” and Molly Hallinan on April 20th, 1945. Sister to Frank Hallinan, and pre-deceased siblings Maureen Connolly, Tony Hallinan and Esther Gordon. In 1964, Jack and Kathleen immigrated to Boston where they would start their lives together and form friendships that would last a lifetime. They continued their adventure with a move to Toronto where they welcomed and raised their three beautiful children. The Callanans' roots and their connection to the Irish community would remain steadfast. Kathleen’s affection for Craughwell and Greenhouse was deeply imprinted in her heart and was passed down to her children and grandchildren following many memorable vacations and celebrations amongst family and the green, rolling fields she loved so well.

Kathleen’s dedication and generosity to her loved ones was immeasurable. Her home was filled with endless love, laughter and compassion as well as the irresistible scent of her home baked brown bread. Her door was always open to friends and family and she made sure there would always be a place at the table and a lively singalong for all who would join. She extended her motherly devotion to nieces and nephews, friends of her children, and those throughout her community. Kathleen’s children and grandchildren find comfort in knowing that they were the pride and joy of her life. They will never forget her warmth and uncanny ability to make everyone always feel welcome and loved. Throughout her journey over the last 14 months Kathleen’s family witnessed a grace and positivity that will forever be a grounding reminder of the poise she moved through life with.

Kathleen’s family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the St. Mike’s Step Up Unit and Credit Valley Oncology team who took outstanding care of her during the final stages of her illness. We also hold immense gratitude for the St. Joseph’s Palliative Care team who were deeply committed to her comfort over the last few weeks. The staff has touched the hearts of our whole family with their patience, understanding, and steady spirit. Kathleen spent her final days with dignity surrounded by Jack and her children in a warm and caring environment that we will be endlessly grateful for.

The Callanans invite family and friends to join us at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, at Windermere, East of Jane subway, on Monday, June 10th 2024 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 3055 Bloor St W, Etobicoke, on Tuesday June 11th at noon, followed by the burial at Park Lawn Cemetery.

Mom, you are desperately missed. You will stay forever in our hearts and your legacy of unconditional love will forever endure. Through unspeakable sadness we find serenity in knowing you have reunited with so many loved ones. We know you are giving us a wink and a smile that will keep us going as we continue to strive to make you proud. Mom, we love you so much. xoxo

Memorial Donations may be made on behalf of Kathleen Callanan to the Palliative Care Centre of St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the palliative care staff for their care and compassion.
