Born on July 9, 1920 in Toronto to parents Joseph (Vernon) and Bertha Liddell, June grew up in the Sunnyside area of Toronto in a household that eventually included her baby brother Ross (1923-2013).
The Liddells were a deeply religious family attending the now lost St. Anne’s Anglican Church – a source of many connections during her early life including her husband, Gerald Bales (1919-2002). Following separation, she joined her parents who were then living in Pickering. This is where she raised her two boys, Richard (Vicki) and Kenneth (Gloria) while commuting daily to United Church Publishing House. Eventually, she moved back near her beloved High Park where she lived for 30 years. She died in Toronto at the amazing age of 104 on September 29, 2024.
June will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Julia (Richard), Aaron (Jory), and Nathan; her nieces and nephews Robert (Gay), Margaret (Paul) and David; along with members of her extended family: the Pippys, Foremans and Pattersons.
June was a beautiful woman. She had a great sense of style rooted in a love of the arts and ballet in particular. In the 1970s, she was thrilled to become executive assistant to the Director of the National Ballet School. She finished her working life at the Chaplaincy Office of Toronto General Hospital. In retirement June pursued her creative side as one of the founding directors and puppeteers of Concerned Kids, an organization using puppetry to inform children about social issues.
June spent her final years in the care of Chester Village Long-Term Care facility. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for all the care and support provided by the staff there.
