In Celebration of

June Mavis Bales (née Liddell)

July 9, 1920 -  September 29, 2024

Born on July 9, 1920 in Toronto to parents Joseph (Vernon) and Bertha Liddell, June grew up in the Sunnyside area of Toronto in a household that eventually included her baby brother Ross (1923-2013).

The Liddells were a deeply religious family attending the now lost St. Anne’s Anglican Church – a source of many connections during her early life including her husband, Gerald Bales (1919-2002). Following separation, she joined her parents who were then living in Pickering. This is where she raised her two boys, Richard (Vicki) and Kenneth (Gloria) while commuting daily to United Church Publishing House. Eventually, she moved back near her beloved High Park where she lived for 30 years. She died in Toronto at the amazing age of 104 on September 29, 2024.

June will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Julia (Richard), Aaron (Jory), and Nathan; her nieces and nephews Robert (Gay), Margaret (Paul) and David; along with members of her extended family: the Pippys, Foremans and Pattersons.

June was a beautiful woman. She had a great sense of style rooted in a love of the arts and ballet in particular. In the 1970s, she was thrilled to become executive assistant to the Director of the National Ballet School. She finished her working life at the Chaplaincy Office of Toronto General Hospital. In retirement June pursued her creative side as one of the founding directors and puppeteers of Concerned Kids, an organization using puppetry to inform children about social issues.

June spent her final years in the care of Chester Village Long-Term Care facility. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for all the care and support provided by the staff there.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto, at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Thursday, October 17, 2024 for a brief gathering at 1:00 p.m. Cremation has already taken place. Interment will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery.

Please, no flowers. Instead, consider a donation to: the Broadview Foundation (Chester Village), the Alzheimer’s Society or a charitable organization of your choice.

June had class. She also had a wonderfully dry sense of humour that entertained us on several occasions. Visiting Ricard and Vicki, perched stoically on their front porch, we'd always stop by for a chat.
RIP June

It was lovely to meet June when I did and it was always nice to hear some of the stories of the times that you shared with her.

June , to me, was a vibrant woman who seemed to enjoy an interesting life.
I remember her best when we all went to a gig of Riichad’s in Pickering.

“Aunt” June was such a constant part of my sister, Laura, and myself’s childhood. June and Aunt Bertha were always at our family events with my Grandparents, Frank and Mabel Foreman.
I still remember her gentle and loving ways. She always played with us while the other adults sat and visited.
As we aged, and my parents aged, we all lost contact but the memories of those days are as strong as if they occurred yesterday. My parents, Fred and Sharon Partington, also pass on their condolences.
What a great life, a great woman. May she rest in peace. I know she is happy hugging our Lord.

I remember the lovely June Bales so well. She and my dad, Alan Paterson, were cousins and we saw her quite often at family events. I also remember her parents, my great-aunt and uncle. I particularly remember her visiting us at our Muskoka cottage. She was so friendly, warm and a lot of fun. She was always, even at the cottage, beautifully dressed and well-groomed. A thoroughly lovely woman both inside and out.
