Loving father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024 surrounded by family at the age of 92. He was born in Santiago, Chile on September 3, 1931. Following the completion of an Architecture degree and a Masters in City Planning, he moved to the United States in 1967 to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also met and married the love of his life Anne de la Mauvinière.
He and Anne immigrated to Ottawa in 1972, where he began at the University of Ottawa in the department of Geography, before dedicating the rest of his career to teaching in the department of Economics. He officially retired in 1997 but continued teaching until the age of 82.
Beyond his distinguished academic career, Julio had a passion for science, literature, and the arts. He loved to collect scientific gadgets, mathematical puzzles, movies, wine, classical music, and visual art, which included a beautiful collection of quilts made by Anne. When he wasn't researching academic books, he would read everything from classic literature to mystery novels to international cookbooks. He especially enjoyed preparing and eating fine food for and with his children, as well as wearing colourful yet elegant clothing. When he travelled, he liked to visit a place time and again so that he could get to know it like a local. He spent summers with his family in the Maritimes when they still lived at home and then, after retirement, he made annual trips to Venice, Italy. Later in life, he loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren Vera, Brigitte, Roxy, Xavier, Oscar, Theo, and Nico. His favourite spots to take them were the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, the Museum of Science and Technology, and long walks along the Ottawa River.
He is survived by his children Cristobal, Lucanor, Leonardo, and Cordelia, all of whom he was very proud of. We all loved him and will miss him.
If desired, donations in Julio's name can be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
