Passed away peacefully at home with her family around her after almost a year-long struggle with the effects of organ rejection following a double lung transplant in January 2021.
Judith was born in Toronto to the late John and Joan Anderson and was the loved and loving sister of Jane Anderson-Renton (Michael). Married for 43 years to her best friend Charles Stuart who misses her greatly. Proud mother of Patrick (Heather) and Bryan (Lyndsay), and adoring grandma of Peter, Alice, and Aila. Fond daughter-in-law of centenarian Sylvia Stuart and dear friend of Jennifer Footman.
Judith and math were not friends, which blocked her direct path from high school to university. She was accepted as a mature part-time student at Woodsworth College of the University of Toronto. Judith thrived in the study of English literature, earning her Honours BA and MA at U of T and then her Ph.D. at York University, where she taught as a contract faculty at York for many years. Judith loved teaching and was both humbled and pleased to hear from students who told her she had made a difference in their lives.
Judith learned to curl from her mother and went on to considerable success at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club, winning both the ladies and mixed club championships on multiple occasions. She was also a positive teacher for Charles, Patrick, and Bryan and new mixed curlers at the club over many years.
Despite her fear of flying, Judith and Charles enjoyed traveling near and far, including summer curling trips to the US and Europe. In 2017, they played (and lost) against both Niklas Edin and Anna Hasselborg in a fun spiel in Oslo organized by one of the Norwegian world champions with the crazy pants! Bermuda, Cape Cod and the Napa Valley were favourite and frequent vacation destinations.
The family is very grateful to Dr. Frank Ritacca for correctly diagnosing scleroderma as the cause of Judith’s health problems and promptly referring her to his colleagues at Toronto General, where she received outstanding care from the entire respiratory and lung transplant team, which is rated among the very best in the world.
Visitation will take place at the Turner & Porter Neweduk-Erin Mills Chapel, 1981 Dundas St W in Mississauga 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on May 7. Service will take place at Erindale United Church at 1444 Dundas Crescent at 11 am on May 8, with interment to follow at Erindale Cosmopolitan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Judith’s memory may be made to the University Health Network Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.
