In Celebration of

Barbara Joyce Nicholls

March 11, 1930 -  July 9, 2021

(NEE NEWBOLD)

Barbara Joyce died peacefully in her sleep in her 92nd year at ARCH Hospice, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on July 9, 2021. Predeceased by her beloved husband Ernest and daughter Rhonda. Loving mother of son Brent and daughter-in-law Dana; and daughter Valerie. Dear sister of Eric Newbold (the late Iris), sister in law of Joan, (the late Stan); grandmother of Holly, Vanessa, Marianne (Scott) and Hazel. Great-grandmother of Leah and Katherine.

Joyce was born, raised and lived in Islington, Ontario where she spent decades in an illustrious teaching career. Her globetrotting adventures numbered dozens and memories of these trips lasted her a lifetime. But her all time favourite was time spent at her beloved cottage on Tea Lake. She revelled in telling stories of being one of the first cottagers on the lake and how they had to get there by boat. It was her paradise.

Due to Covid19 capacity restrictions, visitation is limited and will be by invitation only at Turner & Porter, Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario on Friday, July 16, 2021 , followed by an invitation only funeral service at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 3962 Bloor St. W., Etobicoke, Ontario.

Live stream of the service will be available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myQB4PzL6N8

Inurnment at a later date. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be maintained.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Society or ARCH Hospice, 229 Fourth Line W., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, P6B 0B5.

We wish to thank the amazing staff at Collegiate Heights in SSM for their exemplary care, compassion and support of Joyce during her 5 year residence. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the palliative care team at Sault Area Hospital and staff at ARCH Hospice for their gentle and caring benevolence during Joyce’s sojourn.

Dear Brent, Dana and family,
As you know, we had the great pleasure and delight of being next door neighbours with Joyce on her beloved Tea Lake. She shared her wonderful stories and lore of the lake with us at many get togethers and dinners, and we had frequent 'chin wags' right in the lake as she did her daily 'swim walks.' Her liveliness and zest for fun, along with her many travel adventures continues to inspired us to live life to the fullest at any age. She was young at heart and possessed a wonderful spirit of vitality and community. While she will be missed, thanks to you and Dana, her legacy on Tea Lake continues. Every time we see the lights on at 'Joyce's Place' and hear the laughter of her daughter, son-in-law and great grandkids having so much fun on and in the lake, our hearts sing. Blessings to you and your lovely family.

What a lovely lady each time we saw each other. Always wanted updates on how we were doing. Loved to chat about her time as a teacher since I was a teacher as well. She will be dearly missed by her family! May God Bless her and her family ❤️
