In Celebration of

Josephine Iarocci, (née Pallotta)

December 16, 1934 -  February 20, 2025

Josephine died peacefully with her three daughters by her side on February 20, 2025, at the age of 90.

It is impossible to express how much we will miss her—her sharp sense of humour, deep intelligence, creativity, and boundless loving and generous nature. Josephine was born in 1934 in the town of Morrone del Sannio (Molise) and emigrated at the age of 13 to Jersey City, NJ with her family. She returned to Morrone with her mother and sisters 3 years later and then, at age 19, married and emigrated to Canada. After raising four children Josephine worked for 20 years for the TDSB, primarily at Seneca School, specializing in the care and feeding of children with developmental disabilities—work that never ceased to bring her joy. Afterwards she continued this love of nurturing children with the Etobicoke Mumsnet program. To the end, and ever-curious about the world, she enjoyed discussing the novels and articles she was reading. Her garden (an echo of the family farm she had loved so much in Morrone) was her masterwork and favourite place: she delighted in the birds and animals that visited (including the rabbits that annoyingly got at the chard) and even in her final days she was thinking about the spring plantings.

Josephine was predeceased by her devoted husband Mario and treasured son Tony, as well as her beloved sisters Maria and Angelica. She is grieved by her daughters Louisa, Bernice, and Angela, granddaughters Gina and Lucia, sons-in-law Brian McLaren, Andrew Filarski, and Ted Zourntos, as well as dear friends and family in Canada, the US, and Italy.

We would like to thank the kind and dedicated nurses and doctors at Etobicoke General Hospital.

Josephine was laid to rest with a private service.

If you wish to celebrate mom’s life, the family would be grateful for donations to the Toronto Public Library, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

What a wonderful life Josephine lived. Full of family and meaningful work, laughter, love and gardening not to mention food!!!! A beautiful soul that will be remembered forever. What a gift you all had in your mother. Let her memory live on in all you do and the joy that you had with her.
Sending much love to Angela, Bernice and Louisa and their families.

Dear Angie K, Louisa and Bernice: I am incredibly sorry for your loss. I met your mom in the grocery store and will never forget how her face lit up when I said: "Are you Angie's mom??" . She may have been slightly relieved as I think she was worried about me as I was staring her down in the cashier lineup! But I KNEW it was her: I could see all three girls in her!! I walked with her to the car and we shared a few laughs. In that 10 minutes of meeting her, I knew she was the best: no surprise, really, when you know her kids. I hope that the grief you feel now will morph in time to memories of laughter and warm nostalgia. thinking of you all. love Steffie.

My deepest sympathies to you Louisa, Bernice & Angela on the passing of your dear mother. I remember her well, during our childhood years growing up and playing with you girls on Queensland Court. They were wonderful years and it was so special that all our parents on the street were friends (Madeline & Frank McAleer - my parents, thought so highly of your Mom & Dad). May your beautiful memories bring you peace and console you at this time of sorrow and loss and may your dear Mother rest in peace in the loving arms of our Saviour.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless

Warmest thoughts to Angela, Bernice, Louisa and your families.

Mrs Iarocci was an exemplary mother and leaves an enduring legacy. Hers was a life well lived, filled with purpose, family, home, good work, and community, touching the lives of many. Adding to another fond memory about her foods: while a younger me may have not yet developed the palate to appreciate her artisanal garden-raised oregano pizza, your mom's efforts were received with much gratitude.
