In Celebration of

Joseph Baranyai

Surrounded by family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Baranyai on July 1, 2024 at the age of 93. Joseph was born in Budapest, Hungary in October 1931 and immigrated to Canada in 1957. He was a respected and skilled Master Tool and Dye Maker and worked as a machinist at the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto for most of his life. Beloved husband to Elisabeth Baranyai. Loving father of George and John. Father-in-law to Wolete, Birgit and Thao. Nagypapa to Matthew and Jenna. Predeceased by his siblings Sándor and György. Praised for his deep friendships, humour, love of music/singing, social consciousness and ability to fix almost anything, he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Friends may attend the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St West, Toronto M6S 1P4 (Bloor St West and Windermere, just east of Jane St.) on Thursday July 11, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at the same location (Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel) on Friday July 12, 2023 at 11am.

Joe was a wonderful and loving grandfather he always went out of his way to make me and my brother laugh. Some warm memories include the Easter egg hunt he used to set up in his large back yard garden. He put so much care into hiding chocolates every year to see us to exited to what the Easter bunny had left us. As well as cooking for us, letting us play in his sandbox trailer, and making silly faces to across the dinner table make us laugh. He will remain an important portion of my family’s history as he and my grandmother brought us to Canada.
