On Thursday, December 5th, 2024, José Tavares passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, at the age of 86.
José was born on the island of Terçeira, and immigrated to Toronto, Canada, with his wife and young daughter. Here, he dedicated his career to carpentry, and contributed to the construction of many city staples, including Toronto’s Pearson airport. Outside of work, he was an avid enjoyer of good food and good company, frequently hosting get-togethers with his wife in their family home. He always looked forward to the summertime, when he could lounge in his backyard with a plate of his homegrown tomatoes and a bit of salt.
He now lovingly watches over his family, as a dear husband to Maria, caring father to Ana (Mario) and Danny (Sandra), and cherished Avô to Caitlin, Matthew, and Alyssa.
His smile, care, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and we are truly thankful for the memories of his presence.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane subway, on Tuesday, December 10th, from 5-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, 588 Adelaide St W., Toronto, on Wednesday, December 11th, at 10 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
