In Loving Memory of Jose Costa

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Jose, known affectionately as "Jose Grande" or "Big Joe," on December 29, 2023, at the age of 91. He passed surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering dedication.

Jose was a true warrior until the very end, embodying resilience and a fighting spirit that resonated with all who knew him. Throughout his 91 years, he held fast to life, demonstrating a commitment to his loved ones and a determination to provide for his family. His love for his family was unparalleled, and he dedicated his entire life to ensure their well-being.

Jose's devotion to his wife Deolinda, spanning nearly 70 years, was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they forged a reputation for unparalleled dedication and hard work in Northern Portugal, specifically in Montalegre. Their enduring bond was a shining example of love, partnership, and mutual support.

The couple was blessed with 6 children, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the love and life they cultivated. Ana (Frank, Danny, Sandra- Kapri), Joao (Celine, Sylvie- Enzo), Rosa (Boaventura, Irene, and Guida), Teresa ( Jose Manuel, Paulo, Michael- Miguel), Lourdes ( Frank, Jonathan -Lovetta, Jessica -Mila), and Judite (Luis, Daniel) each carry forward the legacy of love, strength, and resilience that Jose embodied.

The moniker "Jose Grande" was not only a reflection of his towering height at 6'3" but more so of his immense heart. Known for his unwavering generosity and willingness to help family and neighbors, he dedicated himself to providing support, no matter how tired or overworked he may have been.

A natural storyteller, Jose regaled us with his tales time and time again, leaving us yearning for a thousand more stories from his colorful life. When it came to work, there was no one who could match his work ethic, yet when it was time to celebrate, no one could revel in the joy of festivities like him. His love for life, good food, song, dance, and a good bottle wine was infectious.

His wisdom, rooted in old-school traditions and a vibrant spirit, left an indelible mark on those around him. Even during his bedridden years, spanning over 2 years, he remained the life of the party, with his booming voice, soulful harmonica tunes, and unwavering spirit leaving an everlasting impression on all those who gathered around him.

Jose's larger-than-life presence, his hearty laughter, his dedication to hard work, and his unwavering commitment to family could fill the pages of a book. His humor, work ethic, and the warmth he brought to family gatherings and celebrations are etched in our memories and hearts forever.

As we bid farewell to our Friendly Giant, we hold close the memories of his laughter, his stories, and his enduring love. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit lives on in each of us, a guiding light of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Jose will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and strength will continue to inspire and uplift us, keeping his memory alive for generations to come.
