In Celebration of

Jonas Gustainis

February 13, 1922 -  April 24, 2019

It is with sadness and great love that we announce Jonas' passing. He was a dedicated husband for 71 years to Ona who predeceased him not six months ago. He was a loving father to Laima and Rima, grandfather to Vaiva and Linas (Blythe) and great-grandfather to Tomas and Erika.

Jonas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania. He began studies at the University of Vilnius, but these were cut short due to the war. He married Ona in Insbruck, Austria. Jonas came to Canada on a work permit,
laying down railway ties from Kenora, On. to Edmonton, Ab. When Ona wanted to complete her studies at U.of T, Jonas took on various jobs to accomodate her. Eventually, he was able to become a partner in a successful printing business.

Jonas was active in many aspects of the Lithuanian community: he taught and later served as principal at the Lithuanian school; he served on the parish council; he spent many years as a member of the Lithuanian sports association which organized numerous athletic leagues and tournaments.

Jonas enjoyed skiing, and with Ona and friends traversed the hills of many a resort in Canada and the U.S. He was always optimistic, looked at life with a glass half-full. He loved to be with friends and had a good word to say about everyone. He was always a gentleman.

I truly will miss Jonas and Ona. Happiest memories were visiting them during summer vacations. Wish I had visited more and spent more time with them. Always with laughter and always so kind. Our thoughts and prayers and love to Laima and Rima.

Rest in peace,
Margiris, Colleen, Lucy and Henry
