In Celebration of

John Millar Paterson

March 10, 1936 -  January 14, 2021

“An honest man here lies at rest,
As e’er God with His image blest:
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d,
Few heads with knowledge so inform’d:
If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.”
- Robbie Burns -

Diagnosed with terminal cancer in October, our beloved husband and father passed away January 14, 2021 at home and with his family.

John was husband of Margot (Noonan), father to Shelagh (Kirk Webster) and John and is predeceased by mother Agnes and father Carrick.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, John’s family immigrated to Toronto, Canada when he was 12.

Valedictorian of his Richmond Hill high school, John then graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemical Engineering) from University of Toronto.

John was a life-long learner and had variety in his career as a chemical engineer. After more than 30 years, and in his late ‘70’s, he retired from Tremco. He loved the projects he worked on there and viewed every challenge as an opportunity to problem solve.

His passions included travel, fitness, science and car races (all of us are a little hard of hearing thanks to the Mosport days). John had a great sense of adventure and curiosity, taking the family to Scotland and on road trips to Prince Edward Island and Cape Cod.

He was also an avid reader who instilled a love of reading in his children with weekly trips to the library and by always selecting the right book for birthdays and Christmas.

Without siblings himself, John married Margot Noonan who had 6 of them and he enjoyed every minute of times spent with dozens of nieces, nephews and brother and sister in-laws. He stayed in touch with his Scottish relatives and enjoyed reminiscing with them. John will be missed by his life-long friends, including the Mississauga ‘Delkus gang’.

We would like to thank the palliative care team from Mississauga Hospital, Trillium Health Partners for the excellent at home care John received. If desired, donations to VON Peel are welcome.

We look forward to reminiscing in person when we can all gather again – but in the meanwhile, have a wee dram and think of John. We hope you will sign the guest book and share a story if you’d like!

When all you have is great memories of someone, that says a lot about that person! I remember all those great times at 'the farm' growing up. And all those Christmas Eve's spent with U. John and family. And not to forget those family reunions where U. John would enjoy a drink or two with us. U. John - love you and will really, really miss you. jim

I am John's ( Millar as his Scottish family knew ) cousin . In 2009 , I spent a holiday with he and Margot at Delkus Crescent and grew fond of both of them ., It was a privilege to get to know my cousin and amused him by telling him he was the image of our uncle Andrew Robertson. He was a truly lovely man and will be greatly missed by many but most of all by Margot . Shelagh and her husband Kirk and Johnny. Much love from Scotland
