Passed away peacefully at Toronto’s Kensington Hospice on Wednesday January 23, 2019 at the age of 87. He leaves behind his beloved best friend and wife of 61 years, Margaret (Burke) and his five daughters, five sons-in-law and 13 grandchildren: Beth (Brian Coates; John (Amy), Tom and Martha); Kate (Hugh Stuart; Emma and Ethan); Anne (Jim Barber; James (Tara), Paul (Paige) and Margaret); Adele (Craig Dickinson; Evan and Audrey) and Suzanne (Andrew Cranston; Alastair, Iain and Katie). Survived also by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary and Peter Tuer and predeceased by his brother Bill.

Born in 1931 and raised in Hamilton by Gaspé-born parents John James and Clara (Flynn), Jack had many happy childhood memories including those from his years at Cathedral High. He graduated from the University of Toronto (Chemical Engineering) in 1955. After working for Procter and Gamble and Dare Foods, he and Marg, a fellow U of T graduate whom he married in 1957, moved their five young daughters to Ottawa in 1964 where Jack began a fulfilling career in the Federal Public Service holding positions with the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce, Department of Finance and the Foreign Investment Review Agency.

Jack – whose motto could be summed up through one of his favourite sayings, ‘no static, no music’ – had far-reaching interests and an endless fascination with the world around him. His two lasting legacies are his deep involvement in his daughters’ lives at a time before it was popular to be a ‘hands-on dad’, including taking up skiing as an adult so that he could introduce them to the sport, and secondly, his profound love and respect for our mother and excellent management of her physical care, something that allowed them to embark together on extensive and memorable travels throughout Europe in their latter years.
