John Eric McCarthy, a cherished husband, father, brother, grandad, great-grandad, and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 91 years, on December 21st, 2024, in Mississauga, Ontario, from complications of cancer and diabetes.
Eric was born in Vancouver, BC to Herbert McCarthy (British) and Hettie Strouse (American) and spent his early years in Hamilton, Ontario. He graduated from Delta Secondary School, and went on to complete a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ryerson Institute of Technology (now the Toronto Metropolitan University) earning the title of C.E.T. He worked for over 30 years at Westinghouse Inc. in Toronto and Montreal until his retirement. He was an active member of the Anglican’s Men’s group at St. Thomas a Becket and volunteered at the Y. M.C.A.
Eric was a passionate traveler, photographer, collector and lifelong fan of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats football team. He loved exploring historical sites, camping in the great outdoors and collecting stamps from all over the world. He had his whole family saving every stamp they received in the mail. Eric had an avid interest in the life and works of Winston Churchill and the music of Judy Garland.
He enjoyed gardening, and walking his dogs. He will always be remembered for his devotion to his family, infectious laugh, mischievous sense of fun, and unfailing optimism that it would never rain on his holidays.
In keeping with his favorite song, may he always be somewhere over the rainbow.
Eric is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn; his daughters Cathy (Dave), Susan (Allen), Joanne (Shane), his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Howard), his four grandchildren, Megan (Dan), Carrick, Leah (Madalene), and Nathan (Kathryn), his four great-grandchildren Gabriel, Madeleine, Andrew, and MacKenzie, and his niece and nephew, Valerie (Howard) and David (Cori).
Loved ones are encouraged to share memories at Turner & Porter Funeral Homes (turnerporter.ca/memorials) in lieu of a memorial service. Eric’s celebration of life and internment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Eric’s honor be made to Diabetes Canada, Y.M.C.A. or a charity of your choice.
