With sadness, we announce the passing of Hans Amann on December 7, 2024 at the age of 91 at Trillium Mississauga Hospital. He died peacefully. We will always remember his smile, warmth and kindness.
Hans is survived by his wife Sheila Amann. He was predeceased in 1991 by his first wife, Nina Amann. Hans is also survived by his children Greg (Connie), Justin (Jane) and Giselle (Clark); by grandchildren Max, Leo, Heather, and Rachel/ RJ; and by Sheila’s children Tony, Susan and Jason.
Hans was born in Bermatingen, Germany, to Hugo and Sophie Amann on Oct 1, 1933. He was predeceased by his youngest sister Elizabeth and is survived by his sister Gretel. Yes, they were Hansel and Gretel!
He left home and post-war Germany at age 14 for better opportunities. After completing an apprenticeship as Nurseryman in Switzerland, he worked for a while in Germany, then in 1956 emigrated to Canada. He was welcomed to Toronto by his Aunt Resi and Uncle Waclaw. He learned English and went on to establish independence in his adopted home. He eventually started work as a truck driver, a career that would provide his future family with a secure life.
Hans met Nina at a dance at the German Club in Toronto. His best friend Carl and Nina’s best friend May also met the same night, and both couples eventually married!
Hans and Nina were married in 1959 and started a family the next year. Two years later, after twins arrived, three children were keeping the house very busy. In 1968, they made Mississauga their home. In 1973 they bought some land and built a cottage on Lake Eugenia. This would be a calming oasis in all their lives as the kids grew up. Hans always loved the trees and lake views.
Hans was very proud of his children and set an example of what one could achieve through hard work. He was a quietly appreciative Dad. Their home was welcome to high school friends at countless parties, where sandwiches were always on offer and teenagers would come upstairs to chat with Hans and Nina.
Once the kids had grown up, he and Nina started exploring the world. Their first trip (without kids) was to historic Williamsburg. That began a love of travel, with trips to the US, Venezuela and Europe. They revelled in the new discoveries, history and people they encountered wherever they went.
When Nina passed away in 1991, Hans was despondent. It took him time to recover, but he eventually started the next phase of his life.
He was fortunate to meet Sheila, who became his great love for the rest of his life. He and Sheila married in 1995 (New Year’s Eve in Palm Springs no less)! They entertained innumerable guests at their home with the help of Sheila’s Cordon Bleu cooking, and loved visitors’ company. The combination of Sheila’s delicious dinner menus and Hans’ infectious smile made their dinner parties very special. They travelled the world frequently for many years - cruises became their go-to vacation option, and they went on 21 of them together.
Early during Covid, Hans and Sheila moved into Port Credit Residences Retirement Home, where they received the community and assistance they needed. The last 2 years saw a gradual decrease in Hans’ mobility and memory, and the last 4 weeks he was at Trillium Mississauga Hospital, supported by a wonderful and caring team.
