In Celebration of

Joan Meredith Martin

March 15, 1929 -  October 16, 2019

Joan Meredith Martin (nee Watt)
Peacefully at Humber River Hospital at the age of 90.
Daughter of Alexander Watt and Muriel Creighton. Predeceased by husband John, son David and brother Creighton Watt.

Forever remembered by son Rick, daughter Diana (Scott), granddaughters Juliane, Nicole, Lindsay and Christine, sister Cynthia Pearce, nieces Cindy Zylinski and Janet Corcoran, and many friends in Toronto and Montreal.

Born and raised in Montreal, Joan had a strong intellect and passion for learning. She attended McGill University, where she outgrew her childhood shyness, made enduring friendships and met John Martin, the love of her life.

Joan loved Montreal and was not happy to have to move to Toronto during the Anglo exodus. However, she soon flourished in the city, making more lifelong friends, filling her and John's social calendar, taking courses and joining CFUW Etobicoke, an endless source of learning and connection for her. She had high standards, strong opinions, love of a good laugh and a moral compass that never wavered. She was an avid nature walker, swimmer, cross country skier, gardener, traveller, reader and CBC radio listener.

Joan fought through many adversities with unfailing courage, including the loss of her son David and the devastating onset of complete blindness in her final years. Her sense of humour, curiosity, pluckiness, thoughtfulness, practicality and trademark phrases stayed with her until the end.

Joan’s message to all is, “like the musical says, don’t cry for me Argentina. I’ve had a wonderful life.”

Many thanks to the staff at the Village of Humber Heights for their care.
A memorial celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at Mount Royal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

My family and I offer our deepest condolences .
Mrs. Martin was a super attentive hostess and very kind and welcoming to me during my high school years at E.C.I. . There were many lovely after school days spent with Diana at her home in the Kingsway , sipping tea, studying or just hangin' out.
Joan will be missed by her family.

Dear Diana and Family,
You are in my thoughts today as you tenderly recognize your mother's role
in your lives and consider the days ahead without her presence.
May you and your family come together and value this special time with each
other.
In sympathy,
Grace Hunter
