Peacefully, on March 3, 2020, at St. Mary’s General Hospital, in Kitchener, at the age of 89, Jean Eleanor Stubley passed away.

Jean was born and raised in Peterborough. She joins her sister Marion and is survived by her brother Ralph. As a young woman, Jean belonged to the Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT) through church. As a member of CGIT, besides enjoying outdoor and other activities Jean was to “cherish health, seek truth, know God, and to serve others”. She carried these tenants with her for the rest of her life, becoming an active member of the community and striving to serve others. She trained as a nurse at Peterborough Civic Hospital, finishing her training in 1953. That was also the same year she married the love of her life, David, who she met during nursing school. After having her four children, Gordon, Elizabeth, the late Eleanor and Peter, she continued her passion for helping others by getting her Bachelor of Nursing, part time while taking care of her children, graduating in 1977. She worked as a community nurse for a few years before going back to school, where she earned her Master’s in Nursing and devoted the rest of her career, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto, to helping the families of chronically ill and geriatric patients. After retiring, Jean stayed involved in the community and served others by volunteering at the Compass Food Bank in Mississauga and she also enjoyed singing as a member of the St. Bride’s Anglican Church choir.

Some of Jean’s best memories are from her time spent with David at Lepha Lake and, after his passing, at her cottage on Twin Lakes, New Liskeard. Being outdoors invigorated Jean’s spirit. At the cottage she loved swimming, rowing and canoeing and spent many summers with her children and David, camping at Lepha Lake . Even at Heritage Glen Retirement Residence, where she lived in her last few years, she insisted on going for walks outside, often down to the lake, as much as possible. Her grandchildren, Heather, Kimberly, the late Michelle, Jennifer, and Eric, remember fondly visits to the cottage to see their grandma which always involved trips in the canoe and rowboat as well as long walks around the lake.

Making meaningful and long-lasting social connections was another way Jean stayed involved in her community. Jean maintained many long and deep friendships, until she passed. First and foremost, in her priorities was always her family and during her last few days she talked constantly about her love for her family and her friends. She will be remembered as a loving and committed wife, mother, sister, and grandmother and missed by everyone who knew her.

Family and friends may call at the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy 10 N. of Q.E.W) on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. with a light lunch after the service.
