In Celebration of

Jan Slowik

June 14, 1922 -  April 13, 2020

On Easter Monday, April 13, 2020, Jan Slowik, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 97.
Janek was born on June 14, 1922, in Szczepanowice, Poland to Wojciech and Maria Slowik.
Janek grew up on his parents' farm and later moved to the city to go to school. His academic career was cut short when he was arrested and taken to a concentration camp during WWII. After the war ended Janek went to live in Sweden where he recovered. A few years later when the opportunity to immigrate to Canada came, he decided to go. He settled in Toronto. On Sept 5, 1964, he married Stasia. They had one daughter Margaret (Jim) Swartz and 2 grandchildren, Zachary and Natalie.

For most of his working career, Janek worked as an oil burner repairman. He worked many 24-hour shifts for several years and eventually became an inspector. At home, he enjoyed working outside in the garden. Every year he grew tomato plants from seed. (Including this year) He was also very handy and could fix anything. He was very knowledgeable about vitamins and loved to exercise. He practiced yoga until the age of 95 and then he continued to exercise in his wheelchair. He often gave advice to many of his nurses on diet and exercise.
Despite being a quiet person, Janek was very passionate about helping others. He invited many family members from Poland to live with him so they could have better opportunities.
Janek will always be remembered for his positive attitude, strong will, and devoted faith.
He is survived by his wife Stasia, daughter Margaret (Jim) Swartz, grandchildren Zachary, and Natalie and granddog Chloe.
He will be greatly missed by many.

In loving memory of Wujek Janek. My dearest uncle & godfather. Who was always there for me and my family in the many stages of our lives. I must have inherited my vitamin knowledge from you:) :) Your presence we will dearly missed. Your many memories we will treasure & share. I only wish heaven had visiting hours.

Silly memory that made me smile: When Wujek would come over for dinner and he would always fall asleep at the dining room table.

We will miss you and for now, GOOD-BYE

This is the End of an Era ... my uncle Jan was a big part of my life growing-up ... I spent many summers with him, my aunt and cousin ... enjoying the cottage and visiting the Home Improvement stores in Simcoe and Orillia ... both my cousin and I would accompany him as we loved picking-out paint swatches and kitchen cabinets :)

A very quiet man ... he will always be remembered and have a special place in our hearts!

Gwizdala and Grzela Families .... we will miss you Wujek Janek xoxoxo
