In Celebration of

James McDermott

May 14, 1951 -  July 12, 2022

On Tuesday, July 12, 2022, James (Jim) Joseph McDermott passed away peacefully at the age of 71.

Jim attended Kipling Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, where he met his wife of 46 years, Mary-Jane, along with many lifelong friends. As a young adult, he continued his education at York University, followed by earning an LLB at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Canadian Bar Association in 1978 and began a long and successful career as a lawyer. Jim spent more than 36 years as a Partner at several prestigious Canadian firms and completed his career in 2014 with Bennett Jones LLP.

Beyond his many educational and professional accomplishments, Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. With family by his side, he was happiest on the water, spending his summers fishing and enjoying cottage life.

Jim will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Mary-Jane, his loving son James (Amanda), and his best friend and loving daughter, Lauren. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Ava, Owen, Callum, nieces, nephews, and friends.

In memory of Jim, donations to the Canadian Lung Association or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

MaryJane, James, Lauren & family, Don & I were deeply saddened and shocked to hear about Jim. So many memories come to mind … x-country skiing at Tamwood, seeing Jim toss those skis over the hill! His was a life well lived just as he enriched the lives of those who knew him. The memories you made together will never fade and will carry you through the valleys ahead. We are sending our deepest condolences and heartfelt hugs to you all. May Jim’s road ahead be filled with peace.
