In Celebration of

Irene Teresa Cowan

July 11, 1951 -  June 26, 2020

On Friday June 26th, 2020, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, we said goodbye to our beloved Irene; the pillar of our family. Irene will be fondly remembered by her husband and best friend Peter, children Krystyna (Sekhar) and Jeffrey (Rebecca), as well as her mother Jadwiga, sister Yola, niece Kristen (Sean) and lifelong friend Heather.

Irene had a playful and curious spirit and was determined to always keep learning and growing. Her openness to adventure and fierce love for her family and people in general deeply enriched her life and the lives of others. There is no question that Irene made the most of the time she was given. In their forty years of marriage, she and her husband Peter were able to accomplish many great things together. They loved to travel, and built beautiful homes in Ottawa, Florida, Mississauga, and on Grand Lake in Quebec. Irene worked hard and had successful careers in public service and real estate. Despite all this, there was never any question that Irene’s proudest achievement was her family. She was a loyal and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Irene poured endless energy into all of her life’s pursuits, but especially when supporting those close to her and playing with her three grandsons Jackson, William and Riley, or any of the family dogs.

For eight weeks Irene fought bravely against a rare and aggressive form of Lymphoma. She showed amazing strength in her battle against the illness, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family. A small funeral will be held for immediate family only, followed by a broader celebration of life with other friends and loved ones when it is safe to do so. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Irene’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, The Canadian Cancer Society, or Canadian Blood Services. Those wishing to share their condolences are encouraged to sign the Guestbook below.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Irene. My thoughts and condolences to Irene's family and friends. I first met Irene in 1981 when she and I worked together at Customs and Excise in Ottawa. I remember Irene' s smile and her warm and kind personality. We will all miss this wonderful person very much.

I met Irene at a gym where a group of us became friends. Special memories include Irene's surprise 60th birthday party, day visits to her beautiful family cottage and group dinners where one friend named Irene and Peter - the best looking couple. Irene will be missed by many.
