In Celebration of

Ilario Maritan

January 24, 1926 -  March 16, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father Ilario on Tuesday, March 16th, 2021 at the age of 95 at Sunrise of Erin Mills Senior Living Community.

He leaves behind his wife Rita of 64 years. He will be dearly missed by his daughters Sara (Noe) and Silvia (Renzo) and grandchildren Andrew, Christopher, Catherine and Melissa. He will also be missed by his sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, close friends…both here and in Italy.

He was born in Paese, Treviso, Italy on January 24th, 1926 to parents Giocondo and Maria Maritan. He was the 2nd oldest child of 8: Erminia (Luigi), Sr. Gemma, Ottavio (Lilliana), Oliva (Gino), Natalina (Narciso), Sr. Antonietta and Bruna (Bruno). He immigrated to Canada and married his love Rita in 1956 and started their family with Sara and Silvia. Mom and Dad were proud of the life they built together. They provided us with a strong foundation for how to live our lives. Watching their children and grandchildren grow was their main happiness and joy.

Dad’s pride was first his family and then his home on Randi Road where he and Rita lived for over 60 years. He will be remembered by family and friends as a loving and caring person. Their home was filled with love and joy and welcomed many family and friends throughout the years.

As many Cooksville Italian residents, he worked at “The Brickyard” and then found work closer to home at “Cooksville Steel” where he could be seen riding his bike to and from work every day for the last 25 years of his working life.

Dad enjoyed his large backyard and spent countless hours tending to his vegetable garden. He was meticulous about keeping his grass “just right”. If he wasn’t in his garden, you could find him sitting on his lawn chair on his front verandah “watching the world go by” and talking to his long time neighbours. People can also remember seeing him walking to St. Catherine of Siena church every Sunday for mass where he was an usher for many years.

Many thanks to Dad’s doctors and nurses who looked after him during the last eight months. Special thanks to all the Care Managers, nurses, and staff at Sunrise of Erin Mills Senior Living Community for their unforgettable support and for looking after Dad with incredible compassion and understanding since last September.

Dad, your work here on earth is done. Continue to watch over us like you always have. You will be forever missed but never forgotten. Love you always. Rest in peace.

Considering the current pandemic, a private viewing will be held and is by invitation only.

Zia Rita, Sara, Silvia and families, my sincerest condolences on the loss of Zio Ilario. He was a life-long family friend and known to us as 'Compare Ilario'. My mother, sisters and I would often cross paths with Zio Ilario walking home from church on Sundays. I remember he always looked so dapper with his stylish hat on - always a friendly hug and hello along the way. A true gentleman. Riposa in pace Zia Ilario.
