In Celebration of

Patricia K. Holman

January 4, 1934 -  May 12, 2019

Barb and Cheri Holman are saddened to announce that our mother, TRISH HOLMAN, died of Multiple Myeloma on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at the Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke Ontario.

Trish was born January 4, 1934 to Margret and Gerald Malaher, grew up in rural Manitoba and then moved to Winnipeg where she became a public school teacher after graduating from the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. After having two children, she realized the need for a nursery school, and with two others, owned and ran St. Peter’s Nursery School at Grant Avenue.

The family moved to Toronto where Trish became a Junior Kindergarten teacher with the Etobicoke Board of Education. The biggest advantage of being a teacher was that she could spend the summers at West Hawk Lake Manitoba in the cottage she and her husband David Holman built with her parents in 1957. Trish was very involved with: Girl Guides, at age 16 she was one of two guides representing Canada at “Our Chalet” in Switzerland; Couples Club and English conversation at the Church; The Etobicoke Osteoporosis Support group, as president; organizing expat Winnipeggers and later community members in their biweekly volleyball games and get-togethers afterward; Winfal Seniors at West Hawk Lake, as president; The Horticultural Society, arranging flowers for competition; Basic Knits, a pattern company that specialized in sewing with knit fabrics; and continuing the community atmosphere she felt from her neighbours when she moved to Islington in 1969.

Trish was very much a documenter of both ongoing and past events. Because of this, we have a wonderful record of her, and our lives. You are invited to upload photos and videos and any condolence messages to this memorial website, to share what Trish meant to you and remember the times you had together.

There will be a Celebration of her Life at Islington United Church in Toronto on Friday May 17, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. You are welcome to visit in the church’s “Reception Room” starting at 10:30 a.m. and light refreshments will be served there, following the service. Trish’s ashes will be interred at the family plot at Elwood Cemetery when the family is in Winnipeg this summer. For a map and directions, click on the button labelled "View Funeral Details", below.

Instead of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Dorothy Ley Hospice, The South West Whiteshell Fire Department or a charity of your choice. For your convenience, you can reach websites for the hospice and the fire department (and many other charities) by clicking the "Donation" button, below.

The Dorothy Ley Hospice: Their loving and caring services are provided to anyone, free of charge. Trish went to a community day programme there every Wednesday for two years, before entering the hospice residence on Tuesday, May 6.

South West Whiteshell Fire Department: The main volunteer station is at “our lake”, West Hawk Lake, with a substation at Falcon Lake. They help protect our cottage, the cherished place for cross-generational and “east-meets-west” family gatherings over the years.

A. Trish is a wonderful beautiful soul who I treasure with my heart. I greatly admire that she was one of the first people to recognize that my house was my own following my parent's death.

Blessings and Hugs to you A. Trish

A good heart has stopped beating, a good soul ascended to heaven.
I am saddened about Trish ‘s death, but relieved for both of you that the painful struggle had ended.
Please accept my warmest sympathy,
Over the Past six months Trish and I have spent most weekday evenings together, even though I was working it didn’t felt like work. Trish was extremely kind and thoughtful towards me always thinking about my wellbeing over hers,
I really think God had a plan, our (Trish and I) meeting was not by chance. God have use her to give me hope and renew my faith in people.
Be proud Cheri & Barb you had one of the best mother.

So many wonderful memories of this special Cousin, Trish. I was always in great admiration of this older cousin, who could do almost anything. She was an expert in all things guiding, and camping, and truly fell into the footsteps of her father and mother loving the out of doors. Family was important, and she kept in touch. Nancy, our daughter reminded me of the annual xmas cards with the stick figures - our children knew more about the Holmans than other family members, because of her cards. Jennine, Nancy's younger sister remembers climbing up the stairs from the dock at WestHawk to the cottage, and Trish's kind help. She inspired goodness and excellence from those around her. Lovingly remembered.

Dave and Monique Simandl (Neighbour)

Trish was an absolute life force. No wasted moments or opportunitie, just always saying ‘yes’ to life. We lived in our last neighbourhood for 12 years and knee one neighbour to our left and one across the street.
Before we even took possession of our current home, Trish saw to it that we were invited to the annual neighbourhood Christmas Party. Because of this, we met all of our neighbours and developed wonderful friendships that continue to thrive. Nothing in it for Trish other than common sense, a love and understanding of community and willingness to extend herself for the benefit of others. People like Trish come our way so very rarely. We admire her, strive to be like her and learn from her. If anyone was ever in need, Trish was your champion and advocate, organizing those around her to support anyone in need. Trish, you will be missed more than you could ever know, and we will continue to advocate for community connectivity as you so successfully did. God Bless
