In Celebration of

Helen Lucas

April 24, 1927 -  April 1, 2023

It is with profound sadness and heartbreak, that we announce the passing of our mother, Helen Lucas in the early morning of Saturday, April 1, 2023 at the age of 95.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Michael Lucas; her parents Annie and Peter Metil; and her younger brother Peter Metil. She is survived by her son Michael Jr. (Julianne); her daughter Mary Ann (Sal); her grandchildren Jessica (Matt), Vanessa, Jacqlyn; and her great-granddaughters Aria and Gianna.

Helen was born in Olka, in the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Slovakia and immigrated to Canada in 1929. Her family worked extremely hard during the Depression to make a better life for themselves in Canada. As she grew, she held many positions from picking tobacco, working in a millinery and was upwardly mobile in the bank industry eventually owning her own travel agency, Cansov Travel. Staying home to raise their children, our mother proved to be extraordinary. She was a warm, loving, loyal and supportive mother and wife. She was very active in the Carpatho-Russian Canadian organization as well as the Canada-USSR Association for over 70 years, giving of her time voluntarily. She loved music and fostered that love of the arts in her children. She herself was an excellent drummer who played with our father's orchestras for over 25 years. She was very present in her family's life and never missed a birthday, graduation, performance or holiday as she nurtured a love of family and our Carpatho-Russian culture and traditions.

Visitation will take place at the Turner & Porter Peel Chapel (2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, Hwy 10 N. of Q.E.W), on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 10-11 a.m. with a Funeral Service to follow in the Chapel at 11 a.m.

Interment will take place immediately after the Service at Park Lawn Cemetery (2845 Bloor St. W., Etobicoke), followed by a Celebration of Life at The Old Mill (Balmoral Room) at 1 p.m.

I’m so sorry. Was just speaking of her this weekend. Both your mom and dad had a profound impact on me albeit somewhat brief encounters for the most part.Thank you for sharing.
