It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Gwen on Friday, July 15th, 2022. She was at her home at the Palace condominium in Mississauga surrounded by her loving family; her husband Doug, daughters Sue (Brad) and Leslie (Mark), grandchildren John and Charlotte, and her nurturing caregivers are comforted that she is now finally at peace.

Gwen was born in Peterborough on July 8th 1933 to Herbert and Eva Martin, joining older sisters Evelyn and Vivian. She met the love of her life, Doug Hancock, at the tender age of 14 at Peterborough Collegiate Institute! They grew up together, and after Gwen graduated from the Trinity College University of Toronto, and Doug from Queen’s University, they happily married at Trinity United Church in Peterborough in 1957.

She worked for Bell Canada once they moved to Toronto, until Susan Elizabeth was born in 1959, followed by Leslie Anne in 1964. Gwen was a wonderful stay-at-home mother, providing years of motherly love and fun to her daughters. Gwen and Doug enjoyed many years of travelling the world for business and pleasure. They also spent many years building memories with family at their farm in Caledon.

Gwen suffered for many years from Alzheimer’s. Her true traits of grace, kindness, bravery and beauty always shone through this devastating disease. All of her caregivers grew to love the wonderful woman we all knew so well and will miss.

Gwen will be remembered as an elegant and sophisticated lady; she was also down-to-earth, with a great sense of humour. She was very creative, with an incredible flair for art, fashion and decor. She was a wonderful cook for her family and friends. When she entertained, she facilitated a warm atmosphere which made her loved ones want to gather near. Gwen will be greatly missed by her family and friends and always remembered as a wonderful soul.
