March 20, 2024
Guilherme Francisco Lebre passed away peacefully in his home after a brave battle with cancer in his 92nd year. He was born in Santa Catarina da Serra, Leiria, Portugal, on March 6, 1932, predeceased by his father Antonio, his mother Maria Inacia, brothers Manuel, Joaquim, Jose, and Antonio, and survived by siblings Augusto and Maria.
In his formative years, Guilherme faced the loss of his mother at the tender age of 8. Raised by his father, they tended to their farm in Magueigia, caring for their animals, olive trees, and vineyards, instilling in him a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land.
After serving in the military, Guilherme embarked on a journey to Canada in 1956, seeking new horizons and opportunities. Arriving with only $5 and a small bag, charged with determination and resilience, he took up a job washing dishes for 50 cents until he spotted an advertisement in the paper for work in the uranium mines near Elliot Lake. However, his passion for repairing bicycles truly captured his heart, and he soon became one of Canada's preeminent bicycle mechanics, starting at Dukes in the 1960s before moving to Bloor Cycle and later founding his entrepreneurial spirit in launching Queen's Bike Shop. Guilherme found fulfillment in his work, where his skilled hands and kind heart endeared him to the community, and was affectionately known as "Bill the Bike Man".
Beyond his profession, Guilherme was a man of many talents and passions. During his retirement, he found solace and joy in the art of painting and wood carving, where his creativity knew no bounds. He also had a passion for music, particularly playing the harmonica and accordion. He was often the life of the party with his melodic tunes bringing joy to those fortunate enough to listen. His home was his refuge, where you could often find him tinkering in the garage, tending to his garden, and honing his love for winemaking, with a bottle on the table for anyone who visited.
Guilherme cherished his family above all else and has joined his beloved wife of over 50 years, Maria Augusta. He was loved by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and adored their company. He delighted in their stories, and laughter, finding immense joy in their presence. His love for children knew no bounds, and he was always ready with a clever joke and playful smile.
Guilherme will be remembered not only for his talents and skills, but also for his kindness, humour, and creativity which will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer be with us in person, he will forever remain in our hearts, where his memory will continue to bring us comfort and strength in the days ahead. In honouring Guilherme's life, let us cherish the moments shared, celebrate his remarkable journey, and carry forward the lessons he imparted with us.
