Glenna Marguerite Azuma (née Doherty)
October 17, 1936 -
September 4, 2024
Glenna Marguerite Azuma (née Doherty), 87, passed away on September 4, 2024, in Toronto after a brief illness. Born on October 17, 1936, in Phelpston, Ontario, Glenna grew up in Glen Williams, Ontario with her beloved mother (Myrtle), and older brothers (William and John). After graduation she moved to Toronto to work in advertising and lived in an apartment on Avenue Rd. This is where she caught the eye of Dr. Richard (Dick) Azuma who resided on the same floor. It was love at first sight for Dick as they rode the bus together. This led to many dates, dancing the night away, and late night talks in the hall of the building. They were married in 1962 and had three children, Stephen, Robert, and Katie. Their 51-year marriage was filled with love and adventure.
Glenna lived a full life dedicated to family, beauty, travel and friendship. She was a keen supporter of her children and grandchildren through their various pursuits, often volunteering and cheering them and their friends on with gusto. She was a prolific reader, which fed her sharp intellect, and an avid gardener who fostered an exquisite garden. Music was a great passion for Glenna and it played a central role throughout her life. This began, first as a church choir member, later singing with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Caltech choir in Pasadena, California, and always as a music aficionado who loved her subscription to the TSO.
Glenna’s love of antiquing led her to uncover treasures at out of the way sales and in roadside shops as she traveled with Dick, who patiently read in the car while she searched for the perfect piece. She loved to play bridge as much for the laughs shared with her treasured bridge friends as for the game itself.
Through their life together, Glenna and Dick traveled widely, and lived in various locales, from Toronto to stints in Vancouver, France, California, and Indiana, where Glenna forged lasting friendships. Those who knew her will forever treasure her beautiful smile, sparkling blue eyes, sharp wit, wise counsel, and joyful hospitality.
Glenna was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard. She is survived by her three children Stephen (Janet Gunn), Robert (Darlene Broderick), and Katie (Paul Howard), her cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Keira, Meredith, and Alexandra, her sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. She will be greatly missed by all.
The family would like to thank the care team at St Joseph’s Hospital for their kindness and superb care of Glenna during her illness and MAiDHouse staff for their compassion. In lieu of flowers a gift to the Palliative Care Team at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto would be appreciated.
A celebration of life will be held at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel at 2357 Bloor St. W., on Thursday, November 14th from 6-9pm.
