In Celebration of

Francisco Vieira Brum

March 4, 1941 -  December 6, 2023

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Francisco Vieira Brum, who died peacefully in his home on December 6, 2023, age 82, surrounded by his loving children Renata (Michael), Rui (Leanne), Zenaida (Emilio), Sonia (Peter), and extended family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Rosalina de Estrela Matos Brum (née Gouveia, deceased March 10, 1999); parents Beatriz Amélia Vieira and Jose Tavares Brum; and siblings Jose Carlos, Rosa, Maria, and Eduardo.

He will be dearly missed by his children; nine grandchildren, Alex, Luca, Chiara, Giac, Karina, Emmet, Mitchell, Sofia, and Grace, whom he helped raise and adored; siblings Herculana (Jose), Gilberta, Virginio (Alzira), Fr. João Maria, and Marta (Gianni); as well as his large family and friends.

His family is grateful for the care he received from Dr. Piacentino and Dr. Grant as well as his personal support team, including Sherri, Samantha, Rose, Amanda, Harvinder, and Trinidad.

“Frank” was born on March 4, 1941, in the tiny fishing village of Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, an island in the Azores, Portugal. He was the fifth of 10 children.

Although academically bright, he left school at a very young age to help support his family. After he married, he spent a few years working in Bermuda before immigrating to Canada in 1972. He worked as a construction labourer, and when recognized for his industriousness, became a foreman, working on such notable edifices as the Bank of Canada, Pearson International Airport, Hart House at University of Toronto, Ryerson University, North York Hospital, the Wellesley Hospital, the Esplanade, and CN Tower grounds.

Frank was an avid gardener who spent time raising love birds, making wine, and cooking. He enjoyed watching Benfica soccer games and old westerns, and especially delighted in presiding over large family gatherings.

Frank will be remembered as a generous brother, a helpful neighbour, a tireless and dedicated employee, a loyal friend, and a devoted father and grandfather.

He was devoutly Catholic all his life and his example of goodness will endure for all whom he has left behind.
