In Celebration of

Francis (Frank) Mokracki

October 1, 1924 -  August 13, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly loved father-in-law, grandfather, and great grandfather, Francis Mokracki. Predeceased by his wife of 56 years Irene and sons Ronald and Henry.

Survived by granddaughters Allison (Anthony), Lindsay and Laura, and great-granddaughter Hailey. Remembered lovingly by Robin and Christine.

Born in Poland, Frank had an ear for languages and used his linguistic skills after World War II as an interpreter with an organization that would later be recognized as the United Nations. It was during this time where he was introduced to the idea of a better life in Canada by a fellow UN volunteer.

Frank and his young bride Irene, travelled by ship from Europe to Canada, where they took a train from Eastern Canada ending their journey in the Town of Wawa, arriving in the Spring in 1948. It was here he started working as a labourer for a local mining company progressing to becoming a licenced electrician within a few short years.

Proud moments during their time in Wawa included starting a family; actively participating in the Chamber of Commerce and Polish Alliance; and building, opening and successfully running the Bristol Motel. Frank moved his family to Toronto to enjoy early retirement life. This only lasted a short few months before he realized how much he missed working. Finding employment for a manufacturing company, he then continued to work as an electrician until his actual retirement decades later, when he started building a cottage in the Kawarthas.

His proudest role was becoming a grandfather and great-grandfather. He lived life to the fullest, even into his nineties, being more active and independent than most half his age. The last few years, he suffered from ill health and the family would like to recognize and thank all who were part of his care team, especially the amazing and caring staff at Credit River Retirement Residence.

He will be forever remembered for his love of the outdoors; wine making; beloved sports teams (Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays); successful pumpkin patches and vegetable gardens; and his BBQ ribs with grilled corn on hot summer days overlooking the lake. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., on Thursday, August 24, 2023 from 2:30-3:30pm. A Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 3:30pm.

I knew a little about Frank and that he came from Wawa. But had no idea of his other accomplishments.
May he rest in peace

What a lovely picture of Mr. Mokracki! I remember when he took up wine-making as a hobby, and was quite successful with his creations. I recall a memorable summer evening sampling his tasty wines at the cottage. May he rest in peace after a long and productive life.

Rest in peace, Pan Mockracki. Your story is so familiar to so many post-war immigrant families who started anew in a new country and thrived.
