In Celebration of

Fernando Cordeiro

January 25, 1935 -  July 16, 2024

On July 16th, 2024, Fernando Cordeiro, a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in the care of the Dorothy Ley Hospice with his family by his side.

Fernando was born in January 1935, in Almagreira, Portugal. He immigrated to Canada, along with his young bride, Otilia, in 1965. Originally, what had intended to be a year living abroad, turned into a lifetime adventure, and they soon found themselves calling Canada their home. Fernando, with the support of his wife, established himself as a successful and well-respected server and maitre d' in Toronto's finest restaurants. Several years later, Fernando, with his family in mind, chose to change course and operate a bakery, specializing in Portuguese baked goods, which at the time was one of a few of its kind. Fernando's thoughtful, hardworking and respectful nature towards others helped establish himself as a pillar of the community.

Fernando will be remembered for many things: his love of soccer (and his beloved team: Sporting), his masterful storytelling (which always included humour and a special message), his love of gardens and puzzles and good food, but most importantly, his ability to show love and be steadfast in his commitment to his family. He was a man who cared and loved his family deeply, and was loved very much by them in return.

Fernando, preceded in death by his wife of 58 years of marriage, Oitilia, leaves behind his children: Richard, Susan (Jason), Sandra (Matt) and Anita (Francine), as well as grandchildren: Evan, Christopher, Lucas and Emily. He also leaves behind cherished friends, along with relatives in Portugal, whom he visited regularly in his more active years. These trips provided heartfelt memories for Fernando, especially the extended visits with his siblings, nieces and nephews - all of whom he held dear.

Fernando touched many lives in different and meaningful ways, but it is those of his children and grandchildren that he will leave an enduring mark: The Cordeiro family will hold both Fernando and Otilia in their hearts and minds forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested remembrances be made in the form of donations to the Dorothy Ley Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.
