In Celebration of

Fernando Alvarez Afan

August 17, 1945 -  March 23, 2025

Fernando passed away peacefully at Trillium Health Partners at age 79 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the loving husband of Lourdes and cherished father of his children, Emily (Fotis) and Andrew.

Affectionately known to family and friends by his nickname Nanding or Ding, he was born in Manila, Philippines to Arsenio Rodrigo Afán and Marina Alvarez Afán.

The youngest sibling in his family, Fernando is survived by his brother Dr. Isagani Afán (Bernardita ✝). He is predeceased by Arsenio Jr. (Teresita), Luisa (Rene), Francisco (Victoria), Isabelita (Dionisio), Cecilia (Raul), and lovingly remembered by his nephews and nieces around the world.

In Manila, he attended San Beda College for elementary school and high school, then the University of Santo Tomas for Architecture. He immigrated to Canada in 1975 where he worked as a draftsman and kept in close touch with family and friends. He was passionate about singing, jazz music, and sports (especially basketball), and was an active member of his church choir. At home, there was always music playing, either from his own hands on the piano and guitar or through his extensive vinyl collection.

Fernando will be greatly missed for his dry sense of humour, quick wit, deadpan deliveries, and his creative soul.

Our family would like to thank everyone for their kind support and thoughtful expressions of sympathy and love.

Client Fernando was under my care for about six years, it is a privilege for me to walk with him as he navigated his journey with Alzheimer’s disease. I only have good memories of Mr. Fernando as my client, but probably what struck me most, was his love for music because, despite his Alzheimer’s, he would tell me when I’m off beat in my singing or whatnot. One thing more, client Fernando calls me Esther Williams whenever I tell him my name as his Psw, he associates my name with the American singer and swimmer. Remembering you with gratitude…may you rest in peace.

Dearest Lou,
Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your dear husband Fernando. We remember him very fondly over the many years at Sts Peter & Paul. Please forgive us for not responding earlier as we were on vacation and our bell internet was not working so I only saw the CWL email last night when we returned. We will keep you and all your family in our prayers at this very difficult time. We are sure Fernando is with our loving Jesus. May God bless you and your family.
Love & blessings
Merlyn & Dennis
