Eugene John Horbatiuk

November 20, 1921 -  April 11, 2024

Born in Toronto, November 20, 1921, quietly passed away at home April 11, 2024.

Loving husband of Phyllis (nee Weiler) for over 70 years. Devoted father of Paul, David, Stephen (Wendy), Lorie (Patrick), Ken (Kimberly), Lynne (Paul), Catherine (Larry) and James (Kristen). Beloved grandfather of Emily (Benjamin) Wrobel, Jeffrey Horbatiuk, Hunter Harrison, Michael Harrison and Chandler Harrison. Predeceased by parents Samuel and Mychylena, sister Olga, brother Gerald and granddaughter Allison.

Eugene joined the Royal Canadian Air Force honourably serving in World War Two as a Flight Lieutenant stationed in London, England. After returning from Europe, he attended Ryerson University and then for 40 years, Eugene was a Professional Fashion Photographer/Manager of Studio Operations for Photo Engravers and Electrotypers Ltd retiring in1987. Phyllis and Eugene enjoyed many happy summers at their cottage in Port Elgin always welcoming family and friends to stay and visit. He had a passion for growing fruits and vegetables and maintained a garden until his 99th year. Eugene enjoyed tinkering around the house and constructing small projects at home and the cottage. He and Phyllis were proud original owners of the home in Applewood Acres since May 1954.

The family would like to thank long-time family physician Dr. Michael Wong, all of the wonderful caregivers especially Mahalia, who patiently spent countless hours helping Eugene live out his final years at home with dignity.

Friend may call at the Turner & Porter Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., (Hwy 10 N of QEW), Mississauga, on Tuesday April 16th, 2024 from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Dominic Roman Catholic Church, 625 Atwater Avenue (at Cawthra Rd.), Mississauga, on Wednesday April 17th, 2024 at 11am. A private interment will be held on a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Mildmay, Ontario.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Eugene's passing. As your Port Elgin next door neighbours for many decades, we always looked forward to welcoming Eugene, Phyllis and the clan back to their family cottage at the beach each summer. We will forever treasure our many memories of Eugene. Sending our deepest condolences and hugs to all.

We would visit at the cottage since we vacationed close to each other. Her father was always pleasant and a great conversationalist. Sorry to hear of his passing. Thinking of you next week as you lay him to rest. I am in London next week at my daughter’s place so I am unable to attend.
