In Celebration of

Ellen Doreen Berryman

September 30, 1934 -  October 24, 2021

Doreen passed away peacefully at West Park Long Term Care Centre in Toronto on Sunday, October 24, 2021. She was the adoring wife of Jack Berryman for 62 years. She was the most loving mother of Elizabeth Bisson (Paul), Dianne Maddeaux (Murray), Paul Berryman (Kelly), Mark Berryman (Dawn), and Denise McGuckin (Michael). She was the precious Grandma of Elise (Michael), Madeleine (Quintin), Sean, Liam, Jameson, Olivia and Easton, and loving Great Grandma of Wesley and Clementine. Doreen was the youngest child of Mary and Garfield Sanderson. She is survived by her loving sister, Josephine Morrow of Georgetown. She is pre-deceased by her siblings Albert Sanderson, Beatrice London, Dorothy Storey and Jean Stamp.

Doreen was born in Brampton and spent the first decade of her life living on farms in Tullamore and Rothsay. Following the death of their father in 1943, the Sanderson family moved to Elora, which is where Doreen and Jack met and began their life long love affair. Doreen and Jack married in 1959 and moved to Toronto, which is where they raised their family, always keeping close ties to their beloved Elora.

Doreen lived a life of giving to others, through her devotion to her family and her contributions to the Church and the community. She was a member of Humber Valley United Church for fifty years, where she was a Sunday School teacher, an Honorary Elder, and supporter of youth choirs. She was the President of Silver Blades Figure Skating Club for many years. In addition, she volunteered as a canvasser for charities and in arts and crafts programs for the elderly and the developmentally challenged. She was awarded the Etobicoke Guardian’s Exceptional Neighbour Award in 2004 for her contribution and kindness to neighbours and the community.

Doreen’s greatest legacy is her family. She was the eternal cheerleader and supporter of her children and grandchildren, putting their well-being and needs above all else. We will always remember the sparkle in her eyes, her beautiful singing voice, her love of animals, and her bubbly nature.

The family would like to thank the many friends, colleagues, and neighbours who have supported us on Doreen’s journey over the past several years. Special thanks to Dr. A. Zee, to the staffs at West Park Long Term Care Centre and at St Joseph’s Health Centre and to the Rev. Dr. T. Brisbin and the Rev. D. Gibson. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations in Doreen’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario. If you wish to remember Doreen, please do so with a random act of kindness or a gesture of good will.

A private family funeral service will be held at Humber Valley United Church and can be live streamed on Thursday, October 28th at 11:00 a.m. Those that wish to watch the live stream are welcome. Please copy and paste this link to your browser: https://youtu.be/-cbQrVHD2D4

She is Gone (by David Harkins)

You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
