In Celebration of

Edward John Mitchell

November 15, 1936 -  March 17, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward John Mitchell, who left us peacefully on March 17, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 88 years old.

Edward was born on November 15, 1936, and was the eldest of three children. As a young boy, he took on odd jobs to help his family make ends meet. He would proudly talk of how he had a job at a bowling alley setting up pins when he was just 14 years old. Every week, he would save his money so that he could put down a small amount on a new refrigerator. After much hard work, he was able to purchase it outright for his mother.

Anyone who knew Edward, knew that his first love was football. Although he only played at a professional level for a short time, one of his proudest accomplishments was playing in the CFL for the Montreal Allouettes in the late 1950s. He would later go on to coach and mentor countless high school and minor league teams.
Despite his affinity for football, he was a very athletic person who enjoyed playing softball and hockey and being on the local diving and gymnastics teams.

Edward had a great sense of humour, always ready with a quick retort. He was also a very kind man who loved spending time with family and friends.

Edward was predeceased by his wife Lynda, and his sons Terry (Susan) and Joel.

He leaves behind his children, Leona (David), Jennifer (George), Jeremy, Rebecca (Terry), his seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, who all loved him very much.

He will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West on April 8, 2025, at 2-3 p.m. There will be a Memorial service at 3 p.m. followed by coffee, tea and light snacks.

In lieu of flowers, Edward supported many charities including: the Salvation Army, The Scott Mission, Easter Seals, and Unicef. Donations to one of these organizations or another charity that is meaningful to you would be greatly appreciated.

We enjoyed getting to know Ed by assisting him with his personal tax return for several years. We were introduced to Ed by his son Joel with whom we attended Dovercourt Baptist church together. Ed had a great sense of humour and always had a story to share whenever we spoke. Ed did love his family very much and was always kind to others. While we never met his wife Lynda he would often speak of her with fond memories. We are sorry we are not able to attend the visitation and service on April 8th due to a prior commitment but Ed and his family will be in our thoughts on that day. Robert and Fanny Lavery

Ed Mitchell was a fantastic father, husband, and human being. He always had a word of encouragement for anything that we did as kids. I will miss him greatly.
